This month, the VIPs teased, taunted, beat up, and just in general bullied the regular staff; we then made our own VIP forum thread, and put out our own picks for October. Don't like it? Tough. Take a nap and deal with it.

All through out the album there are all sorts of vocal flourishes and shakes that sound like someone who's in control, but just barely. This is my favourite album by one of my favourite bands, so my reasoning may be a bit of a stretch to fit into the theme of "control" but I still think you should check it out. Their Privilege series of EPs are also excellent stuff.

Artist: Song: Album: "Self Control" is sort of the quintessential 80s song. No 80s playlist is really complete without it. I first heard it on one of the GTA soundtracks (which are a must, whoever decides on the songs for each game has great taste). With that said, the rest of the album is pretty sick, especially the song "Satisfaction." Check it out! Artist: Album: When I initially read that the theme for these picks were control, for some reason this album was the first to enter my mind. I still remember the first time I hit the play button on track 1, it immediately took control over my body. You know that feeling when you hear a song and you get shivers? That type of control. As the album progresses, the control intensifies.. You may recognize the name 'Jamie XX' from his bomb remixes or the fantastic band he is in, "The XX". It's an interesting album and I hope people will discover it and love it as much as I did. Fun fact [HASHTAG]#1[/HASHTAG]: Track 13 on this album, titled 'I'll Take Care of U' () was sampled in the huge Rhianna/Drake hit 'Take Care' (). Fun fact [HASHTAG]#2[/HASHTAG]: The song 'Flashing Lights' () by the ever so beloved Kanye West sampled the Gil Scott-Heron track 'On Coming From A Broken Home' () I hope you enjoy my pick! <3 Waffles Artist: Album: One of the greatest exhibitors of control over art is pop culture, and Micachu does an amazing job of eviscerating traditional bindings of pop with Jewellery. Borrowing a great deal of elements from the Fred Frith school of musical thought, Mica Levi completely controls the unorthodox sound of her music by crafting homemade instruments and attacking "indie rock" from a completely different angle. Artist: Album: This was the top album of 2013 for me. Themed lyrics, emotive vocals and an all around talented band. This record shreds, and will definitely help you through any bad days, and even any good ones. Artist: Song: Album: I searched for 'control' in my music library and it was a toss-up between this and Alesso & Calvin Harris - Under Control haha Artist: Album: This is the album that immediately came to mind when I heard the theme. Pat is a great song writer with an interesting perspective, and usually his songs are about pushing back against the power structures that control our lives - banks, police, governments, etc. Scratchy, raw songs straight from the heart. Artist: Album: Meant to be consumed as one hour+ long song, Dies Irae will take you on a satisfyingly haunting journey. Helped along by beautiful orchestration and Mr. Doctor's unique brand of vocalization. With multiple references to Edgar Allen Poe's The Conqueror Worm, this is truly an album based on control or lack thereof. Artist: Song: Album: Their second song on this album, called Control is almost like a warm-up to the following track 'Kelsey' and all the other catchy songs beyond that. Artist: Album: Nomak shows his own unique twist on Japanese hip-hop on this outstanding set of instrumentals. Highly recommended for fans of (a major contributor to the soundtrack of Samurai Champloo) or anyone else looking for well-produced, multi-dimensional instrumental hip-hop. Highlight track: Never Lost Control.
