    January Theme: Winter

    Samhain:

    SleepResearch_Facility - 79°S 83°W:
The frostiest, darkest ambient around: "Ultra deep, glacial Dark Ambient, based around Antarctic co-ordinates" - I can't really say it better than the label myself. When winter rolls around and its properly cold outside, this is what I want to hear.

Explosions in the Sky - Remember Me As a Time of Day:
I tend to get depressed in January - once the holiday craze dies down, and the darkness of Winter settles in, it gets a little sad. I try to get through those feelings by reminding myself that each day will last a tiny bit longer than the last. This song reminds me of that feeling - the beginning is quite sad, but builds to a gentle, more hopeful ending - just like January.

    olenpriit:

Gil-Scott Heron & Brian Jackson - Winter in America:
Hailing from the north, I actually like winter. Used to be my favourite season actually. So it's strange that despite my affection for it, whenever I envision the season in my mind, what I come up with is rather bleak indeed. Darkness, mostly, a season of stagnation, of looking inward. For Gil Scott-Heron, Winter in America signified the season of frozen aspirations - in a way, that's always resonated with me. I guess when temperatures go down to below -30 you kind of get the sense of putting everything off, just surviving through it all, putting life on hold until the first days of spring. We don't live like that here anymore, our ancestors did but we don't. But even in the days of central heating, many of us still trudge through the winter season with a somewhat peculiar sense of melancholy, which we can't quite explain, but which nevertheless sticks with us like a bad memory or a cold.

    Woodenhead:

    Rosetta - Départe/Deneb:
"THESE SONGS ARE ABOUT A SPACE MAN." ...so says the liner notes, but this album totally gives me a winter vibe. It should be noted that this is a somewhat unique album - it is 2 CDs/LPs, each of which is quite different sounding than the other. "The discs can be played separately. Or both sides can be synchronized so that the songs complement one another creating an entirely new mix." The track I chose is actually from the synchronized version (first tracks from each disc); trust me when I say it's the best way to listen to this album. I'd tell you the genre, but I think it's best to discover for yourself...

    condon313:

The Dismemberment Plan - The Ice of Boston:
I've always thought of The Dismemberment Plan as having a sound that is discontent, alien, and frenetic- my winter emotions precisely. Looking to ring in the New Year obsessed with your own deficiencies, failures, and self-doubt, driven to insanity by your cabin fever, and feeling utterly detached from the human race by the layers of ice outside? Then this is your soundtrack.

    goemon4:

Fantastic Explosion - Merry X'mas & Happy New Year:
So I couldn't think of a better album to pick than this, though (probably) only for namesake. With the world intact and the seasons passed, the new year has begun! Though the album may be short and not very wintery, it is still a cool downtempo dnb album filled with cool grooves, nice beats, cut up collages and is overall a good way to start the year if you ask me. Mostly because it was part of a new chapter for the label which I guess makes it a tad symbolic with the whole new year, new beginnings, etc. So sit back, relax and enjoy a great new taste! (Transonic style)

    izmo:

    The Pipettes - A Winter's Sky:
If you're unfamiliar with The Pipettes and heard one of the songs from this album, you'd swear it was from the 1966, not 2006. It's OK just go with it and enjoy. The track I've chosen, "A Winter's Sky", has "winter" in the title, so it's automatically super-qualified for this collection. The title is fitting, because this song is vast. It creates a world, and a time, and a place. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, neither do I. Song's really good tho.

    Vitz:

Bye Horus - Notre Chorale Est Belle:
Wonderfully depressing, painfully beautiful. A piece that makes me want to be outside in the snow, in desolation, watching everything fly by.

    Stormx:

    Cannibal Ox - Iron Galaxy:
Some of the first hip hop I got into - cannibal ox are sparse and electronic. Lyrics are fab, flow is really great! Words: sharp, dark, prog, atmospheric, aggressive.
