    ABT Bonus Points and You

ABT has been around for a few years now, and its been a long time since we’ve addressed our bonus point system. We are looking at revamping it, but before we do that lets look at some bonus points and user statistics, and I’ll discuss some idea’s we’re throwing around. There’s a forum post where everyone can throw in their two cents.

First, lets look at how many total users we have, and how many of those have bonus points (meaning they’ve been active).
Approximately 41% of our total user base have ever seeded any torrent.
Since we’ll be talking about active users who seed we’ll take our 41%, or 3871 users, and analyze some statistics. The total number of bonus points currently sitting in every users account is 255,110,081.
Since a user gets 1 point per hour per torrent seeded, the total seed time for every torrent together would be 10,629,586 days, or 29,122 years. Yea, that’s a lot.
With just the points currently sitting in users accounts, and not counting the points users have already purchased items from the store with, a total of 1,700,733.87 Gigabytes could be purchased as upload credit. That’s 1,660.87 terabytes. 1.62 petabytes. We’re talking astronomical numbers here. I think the problem is becoming obvious.
Now that we’ve compared the Bonus points in users accounts, lets take a look at the amount upload credit purchased using the points system. There have been 1,207.90 terabytes purchased through bonus points, and 385.08 terabytes actually uploaded.
The top 1% Much like in the real world, the top 1% of users control a significantly disproportional amount percentage of the total bonus points currently available. To be more specific, 35% of the total bonus points are controlled by the highest 1% of users.
Working the System When we realize that 1,207.90 terabytes have been purchased through the system, and given the current price of 750 per 5 gigabytes …
    1,236,896.50 gigabytes / 5 gigabyte = 247,379.3 credit purchases * 750 points = 185,534,475 points
After extrapolating a little bit of information like we’ve done above, the amount of points used and available to users becomes even more staggering.
255,110,081 existing points + 185,534,475 spent points = a lot of points (or 440,644,556 points)
In conclusion, the total combine spent and unspent points comes out to:
    2,868.77 terabytes or 2.80 petabytes

What does all this mean? Well it means we clearly have some issues with how the points system is currently setup. There are just too many bonus points sitting out in the wild, and frankly, already spent. New users are being gifted large amounts of points which they can get incredibly and unrealistically high upload amounts associated with their account, discouraging participation.

Well, what are you going to do about it? That’s the thing, we’re not sure yet. Putting together these numbers was an eye opener, it let us easily see there is clearly a problem with how the system works. The staff is mulling over a few ideas, but we just don’t have anything solid. That’s part of the reason we’ve made this post, to get some feedback from our users. What are your thoughts on the bonus points, are they fine or should we revamp the system? Do we wipe everything and start over, or keep going with the way it is?
