New Audio Book Providers
Baker & Taylor this week announced a partnership with Findaway World (creators of Playaway) to launch Acoustik—a new mobile platform to enable consumers to buy and download digital audiobooks on their mobile devices. Acoustik, a free app that works on both Apple and Android systems, is currently live and available from selected retailers, and will soon be coming to libraries. Officials say the deal will offer consumers access to “nearly 40,000 titles from a wide range of publishers,” and an simple, “intuitive way of downloading and listening” to audiobooks.
Digital distributor OverDrive plans to update its audiobook download services to allow users instant access to titles, the company announced Wednesday. Starting later this year, streaming audiobooks from OverDrive will be available on smartphones, tablets, and computers. This instant access to audiobooks will eliminate long download times at libraries and schools throughout the OverDrive network. The new service—dubbed “Listen Now”—will complement existing download options already in use via the OverDrive Media Console app, which will allow users access to complete titles and enable them to sample audio excerpts before downloading titles.

New Delivery Methods
Drivers will soon be able to listen to streaming on-demand audiobooks in their vehicles thanks to a new partnership between Aha by Harman, the provider of audio and infotainment products, and Podiobooks.com, which has a large collection of free serialized online audiobooks.
