    Happy 5th Anniversary, bB!

It's that time of year again... BaconBits Anniversary Time!
(Oh, and holidays and new years 'n stuff, I guess.)

This year the staff has decided to celebrate the our anniversary in two ways. First, we have decided to jot down some stories/memories of the bB days of yore. Give the new users some understanding of where we have been and how we got to where we are today. And second, we all picked a few torrents to freeleech.

So, have a seat by the fire and let us regale you with tales of days gone by. Don't mind the older staff nodding off. It happens. Just wait, it will happen to you. Back in my day you had ATDT, you kids have no idea.... <SNORE>

And, please take the time to share yourstories with us in the forums...

    Anniversary request filling extravaganza!

Story: This one time I banned someone, and we got DOS'ed

    An "Interview Process" Holiday Anecdote
A little over 4 years ago the staff decided that there was a need to change the way new members joined our little site. We had to ensure that members not only met or exceeded a technical skill bar - but also fit with our community culture. Sure, we're a group brought together by the common belief that sharing is not a crime, but we also like to have fun mod-abusing the weak in other ways too; just take a look at SPAM and Contest forums for examples. Point being, you need to have a brain but you must play nicely with others to last here at BaconBits.

This is why the Interview Process was created - to get to know users before they are asked to join. Many of you have been through the interview process yourselves, so you know how involved each interview can be. We ask about your technical background, but also learn about who you are as a person.

This process was created by the Staff through months of hard work, careful discussion, and a few arguments as well to better the community as a whole. We have been pretty successful as we have brought ~2700 new member through this process. I think the fact that the process has remained, for the most part, pretty constant is a tribute to the systems that were put in to place.

So, I dedicate this poem to those that have helped build and maintain the interview process we have come to rely on so heavily.

    'Twer the days before InterBot.
(a.k.a. A visit from the interviewers)

'Twer the days before interviews, when all through the chat
not a user was speaking, not even noob twats.
The moderators were lurking in the channels so fine,
waiting for members to step out of line.

The user pop was dwindling through natural attrition
while Admins discussed methods of site fixin'
With Skee in his ascot, and I a new staff,
wree talking ways to jettison site chaff

Then in the staff forums there arose such a chatter,
a thread had been started to solve this damn matter.
To my browser window I flew like a flash,
Logged into the site, skipped passed forum trash

The Mods that we have all come to know
gave thoughts on how this process should go,
when, what to my wondering eyes should I read,
exactly the process that a good site should need.

With a cute little bot, written cleanly and quick,
We knew Apollo'd been busy, clickity-click
Quite hard to remember, the commands, not his fault.
Via API access to the ReddIt user karma'vault.

    "Now astra05! Now 'Naise!
    Now, bander and c10!
    On, fiver22! On, ivan!
    On, JoshFryGuy and Lit'Life!
    Sometimes from the Goofy,
    and rarely a cook
    'Supervised' by the skee
    we followed rule books.
To the top of the leaderboard!
To the top of the wall!
    Interviewing new members
    interviewing them all!"

As dry heaves that before the vomit do fly,
when they can't get a question, and do not know why
we answer quite kindly and show them the way
to become the great members that we have here today.

Their skill -- how it varies! Their experience -- some lacking.
Each question we ask, saved for later score tracking.
Define a Matroska? A CAM, GIF or Rip?
Really? How can they not know all of this shit?
Alas the knowledge is not what we're after,
but the ability to better the site and its chatter.

We round out the session by rejecting PeerBlock,
    explaining the KBase, define Ashex-Un'Lock.
Tell us a joke, share stuff and be rad
    Don't be a Dick - or you'll get a harsh stab
Do we talk about Fight Club? Share Keys?
    Hell No! Not ever!

"Welcome to BaconBits, seed it forever!"

My favorite memory from bB is how the 2 largest bounties in the requests happened.

mono_zukuri, the OG TorrentMaster, was going through some rough times in his life and had let us know he would be taking some time away from the site. Someone brought up the idea of filling his long standing request for Wise Mind, Open Mind: Finding Purpose and Meaning in Times of Crisis, Loss, and Change. We started adding more and more bounty to it, with NCC1701D and I adding multiple terabytes.

Someone had the idea to let mono_zukuri fill the request himself so that he got the book and the huge bounty. People looked and looked but the book could not be found anywhere. I offered a bounty if anyone would buy it.aegamesi took me up on the offer and bought the book. He got it uploaded and we waited for him to come back and fill it and claim his giant reward. mono_zukuri was exteemely grateful and very happy with the surprise terabytes and his book.

Sadly, I just checked and the upload is no longer on the site. It would have been nice to read the comments but at least we still have the comments on the request. This is the story about how terabytes don't matter and how this community can pull together to do good and of how you can go through close to 40TB of upload in a day.

    ========================

Now for my own personal comment. When I came to bB i was not doing well in my personal life. My wife and I had split and the kids were lviing with her. I saw them as often as i could but it was never enough. I was not working at the time and my stress and depression levels were through the roof. Before I joined bB I had never uploaded anything to a tracker before. The sharing of my files I had ever done was on IRC fserves back in the day. I started uploading here on my first few days in and once I got the rules down I was off and away. There were a lot more comments on uploads at the time and each one made me feel better. Like I was doing something good and I felt needed.

I eventually worked my way up to 4 seedboxes at once for a short period but the money ran out and I had to let them go. A user who I will not name, but who I miss greatly, offered to let me share their seedbox. He said he was downloading all my uploads anyways so it would help him save ratio by just grabbing directly from my folders on his seedbox. I agreed and this kept the upload train rolling. When my benefactor decided he was going to stop paying for the seedbox another user offered me use of their seedbox space and the train kept rolling.

This community is great. I have never felt more at home with than I have here. This place and the people helped me defeat my depression and feel good about myself. I owe this community a lot and hope to one day repay all of it.

    Happy Anniversary

I've been a member here for a little over a year now. I'd technically signed up to a few private trackers before baconBits, but they were all very small trackers, and none of them had any community. However, diving into an interview process with Sartem to join here, I was thrust straight into the community aspect of baconBits. I joined up IRC, and felt at home straight away. I grew to love the community, and to be honest, it's one of the few IRC channels I come back to every day.

I've never found another community as welcoming, friendly, and cool anywhere else. Even to "newbies" who'd be shamed elsewhere, I've found baconBits to be welcoming, accepting, and patient. Sure, a few bad eggs come on through every now and again, but they're few and far between, and quickly disappear.

Although in the scheme of things, I've been here a relatively short time, I feel like I've been here forever. I love the way the community is, and that's what's most important to me about baconBits. Whilst baconBits may not always have the content I seek (though it often does), it has the community I've always wanted. I hope to see it continue this way for many years to come.

I've had the fortune to be on bB nearly from the beginning. While there are a few events that stick out (exchanging t-shirts across the planet is probably my biggest) it's the everyday stuff that keeps me coming back. The new torrents page constantly surprises me with things I didn't know I wanted, and the IRC conversations are always interesting. (If you haven't checked out our IRC, you're missing half the fun.)

A short time after joining bB I started uploading a few ebooks and got a PM from another user giving both points and encouragements. This was my first taste of the community and it would soon evolve into a project we had back in the day where we would translate graphic novels into English. This really redefined what sharing meant for me and it motivated me to improve the quality of my uploads. This translated into more ebook uploads and a better use of tagging to create nice collections, which would have been difficult if not for the help of the ebook helper at the time. A little bit more down the road I became a helper too and have been managing the ebook section of bB ever since. All because a stranger was nice to me right at the start.

I've been a member of this tracker for a little over 4 of it's 5 years. I can think of little else in my life that has remained constant during that period. When I joined this site, I had almost no experience in the world of private trackers, as many, if not most, of my fellow users can relate. Over the years, I've learned a lot, overwhelmingly due to the helpful nature of the community here. Also due to the community here, I've had the opportunity to join a number of other excellent trackers. Whether it's music, movies, tv, ebooks, or otherwise, I want for nothing. But there's always been one thing that made this place my home: the people.

There are plenty of great trackers out there, with plenty of great content (and we certainly have our fair share!), but the one thing that keeps me coming back here is you. You're why I staff here, and you're why I stay here.

I'm not much good at these write-ups, but here we go

I remember being present for Peeble's musical debut on the mumble server. The ladies swooned as he orchestrated an artistic cover of Cooking by the Book. I've got that to hang my fedora and hipster glasses on.

Another mumble adventure was a visit by a past sysop, who joined under an alias to try to hide his identity. However, he was so chemically influenced that he revealed himself with every contribution. Despite being thoroughly blown he pressed on with the ruse, cursing himself with every slip-up until things metabolized and he lapsed into a philosophical bliss.

And of course, there was Brad playing Cards against Humanity. Good times, there. And endless IRC shenanigans, the best of which have already been documented.

As the current comics curator, my focus lately has been somewhat predictable. Still, I like to think that everyone will find something of interest here. (Most of these will require a comics reader of some sort. There are free ones for almost every platform.)

    We3 - 01-03 (Complete Mini-Series)

I was introduced to this bitter-sweet tale of a trio of cybernetically enhanced animals on this site, and it remains one of my favorites. Frank Quietly's draftsmanship complements Grant Morrison's writing here very nicely. (Caution is warranted if you're allergic to onions.)

Saga - Vol. 1 (Graphic Novel)

One of the most acclaimed titles of recent years, Saga is at once a sprawling Scifi/Fantasy Space Opera and a family drama. Brian K. Vaughan scripts it, but Fiona Staples' art is what really sells it. This volume collects the first six issues of the title.

Ms. Marvel - 01-07 (Collected Comics)

This is the newest of my selections—having debuted this year—but in some ways the most old school. Kamala Khan has Carol Danvers' former title and Reed Richards' powers, but she's most reminiscent of the original Spider-Man. Her beat is Jersey City instead of New York, but she's still balancing the dual lives of a high-schooler and a friendly neighborhood superhero. G. Willow Wilson's Kamala is adorably three-dimensional, and artist Adrian Alphona inserts lots of visual easter eggs for the sharp-eyed reader.

Hip Hop Family Tree - Vol. 1 (Graphic Novel)

No super powers and barely any tights in sight. Ed Piskor traces the origins and evolution of Hip-Hop. Originally (and still!) published as a web comic, this volume collects the earliest pages. If you're a fan of Music, Comics, and/or History you'll find something to love about this one.

    The Tick (Complete Animated Series)

Finally, since comics are increasingly making their way off of the page, I give you the animated adaptation of Ben Edlund's superhero parody, The Tick. There were obviously a lot to choose from here, but I think this one best hits the sweet spot of being successful both as a faithful adaptation of the original and as a work in its own right.
