    James Horner - Braveheart

    Genre: soundtrack, film, score

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=121986

Reason for Selection: I thought this was an appropriate choice, the score to Braveheart composed by James Horner has always been a favourite of mine. As a lover of movie scores and soundtracks I wanted to pick something that I really enjoyed but was also easy for people that do not usually listen to this type of music to (hopefully) enjoy and appreciate. I personally believe this score is one of the best scores by James Horner, it truly is epic. I urge you to give this a full listen there is a lot of beautiful music to be heard, I hope you like it

Too $hort - Get In Where You Fit In

    Genre: Hip Hop, g-funk

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=44659

Review - Get In Where You Fit In is the 8th Jive Records album by Oakland based rapper, Too Short. It featured the songs "I'm a Player" and "Betty", plus guest appearances by Ant Banks and Dangerous Crew, as well as Rappin' Ron and Ant Diddley Dog of Bad-N-Fluenz and Father Dom. This album was certified Platinum.

    Ninjatron's pick

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92

Genre: Electronic, Ambient, Ambient Techno, IDM, Techno

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=19162

    Review - Pitchfork Media - 9.4
Stop me if this gets sappy. And it might. Because Selected Ambient Works 85-92-- recently reissued by PIAS America-- was the very first electronic music I ever bought, and certainly the first I ever heard over and over again. Long ago, before I was old enough to drive, I would sit in a small, cluttered bedroom in my parents' suburban ranch house, absorbed for hours by the sounds contained on this disc. The creeping basslines, the constantly mutating drum patterns, the synth tones which moved with all the grace and fluidity of a professional dancer, the strange noises that I'd be unable to identify even if I tried. Back then, Aphex Twin was making music like nothing I'd ever heard before.

They say next to no one heard the Velvet Underground's first album when it was released, but everyone who did went on to start a band. Listening to Selected Ambient Works 85-92, one can't help but imagine the seeds being planted in the imaginations of the lucky few who were there when it all began. Nestled in these simple, undeniably danceable tracks are the roots of contemporary IDM. And despite its somewhat primitive origins, the final product remains among the most interesting ever created with a keyboard and a computer.

    Dream Theater - Octavarium

Genre: progressive metal, metal, progressive rock.

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=7468

Review - Possibly the best album by Dream Theater - their 8th studio album since the bands formation in 1985. Filled with insane solos, this is my ultimate prog metal album, by some of the most technically proficient musicians around.

    j0shmcg's pick

    Marcus D & Substantial - Substantial & Marcus D Are Bop Alloy

    Genre: Hip Hop, Jazz

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=71796222

Reason for Selection - My favorite album of 2010, a must-hear for Hip Hop Heads!

    kobe1981's pick

    DEUX (??) - DEUX FOREVER

Genre: Hip-Hop, Rap, Dance, Funk, R&B

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=674265

    Nebudchadnezzar's pick

Cee-Lo Green - The Lady Killer

    Genre: Hip-hop, R&B

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=71837626

    Review
It was a toss-up between this and Nicki Minaj's album. Features his latest single, "Fuck You," that is so terribly catchy, you won't get it out of your head for days. Very fun album, and i recommend it to anyone! Definitely check this album out.

    Bonus Staff Picks

That's not all. Here are three extra freeleech albums from 2010, chosen by members of staff. If you're interested in more music from 2010, and haven't been following the site blog (shame on you!), be sure to also check out olla's poll results for the What.CD top albums of 2010.

    spacirelei's pick

SPC ECO - Silver Clouds EP

    Genre: shoegaze, dream pop, electronic

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=71839184

Reason for Selection - Probably one of the most underrated dream pop EPs. I cannot stop listening.

    pyth3n's pick

iLiKETRAiNS - He Who Saw the Deep

    Genre: Post-Rock, Alternative, Indie

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=71808564

Reason for Selection - This year has been filled with bands who have released albums on which they decided to sound nothing like themselves (Arcade Fire, The National, The Acorn, et cetera). While not necessarily a bad thing in all cases, it made me yearn for something consistent. This album did exactly what was expected and, most importantly, did it well.

    NormanMcLaren's pick

    Meshuggah - Alive

    Genre: metal

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=695979

Reason for Selection - I can't say that I listen to a ton of metal these days, but I'll always make listening time for a new Meshuggah album, and these guys are incredibly tight live. The album compiles partial setlists from three cities (Tokyo, Montréal, Toronto) with material from culled from Chaosphere to Obzen. I thought I'd throw this out for the metal people who tend not to get enough staff pick love.
