    Hardware? Stress Test Number One.

We spent a very busy weekend installing, encrypting, configuring, compiling, linking, tweaking, importing, exporting, stressing, testing, and in general working hard on the hardware that runs this little corner of the world wide web. Thanks to your generous donations, we were able to double the amount of RAM in our web server and outfit our database server with a raft of SSDs that not only triples available space but also provides mind bending speed compared to our old setup of spinning drives!

Now that we have a speedy site that seems to be in good health, we want to see how far we can push it. We have planned a series of stress tests on the site, and we'll start with a really fun one for everyone involved - staff picks!

As a staff, we really cannot thank each and every user enough for their support and eternal love they have expressed and continue to express through the forums, twitter, donation funds, and more. What.CD has always run on [IMG], and we look forward to loving on far into the future.

    Lemon Jelly - Lost Horizons

Genre: Electronic, Downtempo, Trip Hop, Experimental, Psychedelic

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=23072

    Review:
As anyone who's heard their exuberant first album will tell you, Lemon Jelly are no ordinary chill-out act. Here, the eccentric duo present their second full-length outing, Lost Horizons, and it's every bit as good as their acclaimed debut, Lemonjelly.ky. Inhabiting a world of almost limitless playfulness, Nick Franglen and Fred Deakin make the sort of brassy, beautiful downtempo music that leaves the listener desperately trying to suppress a goofy grin.

This album was just so good that I had to buy it. Etherwood is a really talented guy. His music is made with a lot of emotion invested in it, and it's so fun to listen when chilling out or even dancing to. If I had to think of an album that really touched it, it would definitely be this one.

    Bill Evans Trio - Explorations

    Genre: jazz

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=108702

    Review:
An article in a men’s magazine once suggested an exercise regimen that consisted of a walk to the local record store to buy one Bill Evans CD every day. That way you would not only be in better shape, but you would also have a great collection of piano jazz as well. It’s an established fact that Evans revolutionized the sound of the piano trio; you can bet that every pianist who ever worked the hotel lounge circuit has worn out the grooves listening to his records. However, unlike the cocktail tinklings of his admirers that end up little more than background music, Evans demands to be heard, seducing you with his indelibly emotional playing. Most aficionados would agree that his trio records with Scott LaFaro on bass are his best, and the natural place for a novice to start.

Explorations is the second outing by this trio and took almost a year to record after Portrait in Jazz, the album that won him such great critical acclaim. Evans conceptualized the trio as exactly that—a trio, where each member contributed equally to the whole. It works marvelously: LaFaro’s nimble bass playing and Motian’s drumming provide a relaxed, rhythmic underpinning for Evan’s graceful chords. The trio works magic here, breathing fresh air into standards such as “How Deep and the Ocean?” and “Beautiful Love” and creating the illusion that these songs were written just so someone like Evans could play them. The highlight of the album is “Elsa,” which is one of the most beautiful piano ballads on record. Many would point to the later live recordings at the Village Vanguard as the essential Evans, but this earlier studio recording is quite a treat as well.

György Ligeti - Clear or Cloudy - Complete Recordings on Deutsche Grammophon

    Genre: contemporary classical

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=184998

    Review:
Clear or Cloudy is a profoundly astute description of György Ligeti's career, encompassing both the great sound clouds of his micropolyphonic work of the 1960s, and the crystalline clarity of his early years. It's an ideal introduction to the composer for anyone coming to his remarkable work for the first time, and it is also expansive and diverse enough to interest those who are already fans. The set contains over five hours of music, and the sound is consistently excellent, with the appropriate ambience and presence for the various works.

    Review: David Jeffries, AllMusic wrote:
It should surprise absolutely no one, but Rammstein's CD/DVD live set Völkerball is one for the fan, but what a gluttonous and delicious feast of industrial Teutonic metal they're in for. First off, there's the visual element on the DVD. Not that Rammstein's studio albums are lacking but you have to see their intense stage show to truly appreciate them. Fritz Lang's grungy vision of the future mixes with a stately Laibach kind of detachment while flame throwers, explosions, and hundreds of lights get abused with such abandon that Kiss must be jealous. The DVD features a full show from 2005 in Nîmes, France plus shorter versions of the same set from England and Japan plus a quick snippet from a 2004 gig in Russia. The cameras do a wonderful job of capturing everything important, Rammstein do a fine job of delivering their dramatic vision, and the producers do a wonderful of overdubbing (or maybe Rammstein are really the tightest band to ever inhabit the earth). The casually curious will find the DVD too overstuffed with redundancy and the CD no different than the studio albums, but for fans, this is beyond essential.

People who were ready to discount Brand New into the emo/TRL heap of the 2000s better rethink their stance; Brand New seems to know exactly what they're doing and this record is a testament to their ability to stay true to themselves. Whether they want to stay underground or fully break into the mainstream, this album has the potential to do either. Either way it doesn't really matter -- whatever happens, there's no denying how excellent this record is.

    Muddy Waters - Electric Mud

    Genre: Chicago Blues, Psychedelic, Blues-Rock

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=2653

    Review:
This is a one-off commercial experiment by Muddy Waters and the Chess Records label. While Waters and Chess were revered by the artists who made up the British Invasion, by the time of the Summer of Love they had been all but forgotten by their (African-)American audience. In an attempt to reclaim their territory, Chess (and every other "black" label) jumped on the psychedelic bandwagon, by re-recording previous hit songs. The entire effort reeks of extreme commercialism. But somehow the end-result bridges the otherwise unclaimed gap between early psychedelic rock and the early smooth psychedelic soul that had grasped the young audience of the day. It is loud. It is filthy. It is dissonant. It rocks, it wails, it growls. It is unapologetic, unstructured, chaotic, powerful. This is the headbanging blues record no one asked for. As the most psychedelic blues record ever made, it is worthy of recognition as one of the most daring/absurd experiments in musical history, that completely failed in its attempt to capture the accessible spirit of popular psychedelic music, and in doing so became a one of a kind record that would influence artists for decades. And it is damn good.

texas pandaa are an interesting Japanese indie/rock band. With a lot of minimalistic and light indie rock elements, texas pandaa follow a less-is-more kind of tempo.
Somewhat like Korea’s Donawhale, texas pandaa fill speakers with the perfect amount of music and the vocals follow the instrumentals adding another layer to the overall presentation rather than be so focused on the vocals.
Released in 2007, Days is a nice window into the indie rock scene of Japan. Many of the songs would sound perfect as a soundtrack to any high school angst movie.
The ten track album has a perfect flow from song to song and since all the songs are sung in English, listeners are not going to miss anything by not understanding the lyrics.
texas pandaa create atmospheric, airy indie rock and many people should find them satisfying.

After many years as a sideman for other people's projects -- including Aimee Mann, the eels, Fiona Apple, Elliott Smith, Jellyfish, and the Wallflowers, among dozens more -- multi-instrumentalist, producer, and general "it man" Jon Brion stepped behind the microphone for his debut solo album in late 2000. Godflesh - Pure

    Genre: industrial metal, grindcore

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=27745

    Review:
From the first seconds of the first song, it's clear that Pure is not going to be a straightforward album, not that fans of earlier Godflesh would have expected one. Though offering an aggressive sound, Godflesh was not one to steer clear of subtlety. Equal parts Black Sabbath, industrial metal, and hardcore punk, it's possible to hear ambient and dub influences even in their early career.

Sonically, the influences they exhibited in Pure and elsewhere favor the discordant over the melodic, the abrasive over the soothing, and the use of chromatic chords over the traditional. Opting for drum machines in the earlier parts of their career (including this album) brings a mechanical precision to the rhythm that is not evinced elsewhere in the music.

    Yusef Lateef - Eastern Sounds

    Genre: jazz, hard.bop

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=11615

    Review:
One of multi-instrumentalist and composer Yusef Lateef's most enduring recordings, Eastern Sounds was one of the last recordings made by the band that Lateef shared with pianist Barry Harris after the band moved to New York from Detroit, where the jazz scene was already dying. Lateef had long been interested in Eastern music, long before John Coltrane had ever shown any public interest anyway, so this Moodsville session (which meant it was supposed to be a laid-back ballad-like record), recorded in 1961, was drenched in Lateef's current explorations of Eastern mode and interval, as well as tonal and polytonal improvisation. That he could do so within a context that was accessible, and even "pretty," is an accomplishment that stands today.

Townes Van Zandt is my favorite songwriter of all time. His songs are pure poetry, plain and simple, and this live recording is Townes at his best- just him and an acoustic guitar at the legendary Old Quarter in Houston, Texas in 1977. His songs alternate between humorous and heartbreaking, but mostly the latter. This album gives me chills every time I listen to it and his songs will be sure to strike a chord with everyone on some level. Don't miss this! A true songwriter's songwriter.

Layered rhythmic pulses, repeated patterns and small, incremental changes lead the listener down a path of ongoing, almost organic musical discovery. A phrase appears once, is repeated, then inverted, then disappears – only to be reborn in another key or at another tempo. Tones appear discretely, then coalesce, then separate again.
