Never upload .torrent files to other trackers - 06/05/15

Also in light of the recent peer attack to BTN and PTP, we would like to remind you to never upload HDBits .torrent files to other trackers. First of all will you be giving another tracker your HDBits passkey. Secondly, since many trackers don't change the info hash of a torrent on upload, the info hashes between HDBits and for example PTP will be identitcal. This means that in the event of a peer attack on PTP, HDBits peers might be at risk. And vice versa. In order mitigate/contain the potential fallout, please do not upload HDBits .torrent files to other places. Instead, create a new .torrent file.

If you are an uploader and upload your material to multiple trackers, it should be possible to create a .torrent file with an empty tracker url and upload that file to said trackers. Since we always modify the info_hash (which is the reason our uploaders always have to (re)download the .torrent file from the site), this will assure the the info hashes of both .torrents will not end up being the same. This is the fastest way anyway. If you upload to multiple trackers that do not modify the info_hash, they will be equal, but as that won't affect HDBits, that's much less of a problem for us. We are trying to convince other trackers to do the same thing we do (always modify the info hash), but even then, just don't use HDBits .torrent files anywhere else.

Treat your passkey as your password. You don't use the same password on multiple trackers either or give the staff from another tracker your HDBits password, RIGHT?

Also note that even if you don't use the HDBits .torrent file, you still need permission from the original owner to cross-upload original HDBits content to other trackers. Just ask first, the vast majority of the uploaders won't have any problems with this, but they will if you don't ask and they find out.
