    Jelly Roll Morton - 1926-1930

    Genre: New Orleans jazz

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=412381

    Review:
Jelly Roll Morton made a lot of exaggerated claims in his life, taking credit for the birth of jazz. No one really believes these claims, but it's amazing how much truth there is to them. For one thing, Jelly Roll Morton revolutionized the form, more than Charlie Parker did and maybe even Louis Armstrong. His early RCA Victor recordings laid much of the music's foundation, particularly the Chicago "Red Hot Peppers" recordings, and Morton himself has been hailed as the first great jazz composer in a long tradition of composers that include Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, and Wayne Shorter. Simply put, you can't say enough about the greatness and the importance of Morton's music.

Ensemble Modern plays Paul Hindemith: The Chamber Concertos

    Genre: 20th Century Classical

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=71828332

    Review:
Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) is among the most significant composers of his time, he produced expressionist works by combining neo-classicism with modern harmonics and jazz elements, and in the 1920s developed a contrapuntally complex style. His early music was considered anti-Romantic and iconoclastic, but it also showed humor, exuberance, and inventiveness. His best-known works are appreciated for their warm and opulent orchestral colors and gestures, a unique multi-rhythmic sense, and flowing, rapid polyphony. The Kammermusik series - for small and unconventional groups of instruments - is performed on this wonderful recording by the always amazing Ensemble Modern.

    Bellowhead - Hedonism Live

    Genre: Modern folk

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=72314377

    Review:
Bellowhead are something I stumbled upon quite by chance, when watching a folk festival on TV. The thing that really stood out to me was both their enthusiasm when playing live and the vast range of instruments their music covers. Playing a number of songs ranging from traditional folk to dance tunes and shanties (even disco shanties!), they encompass a huge number of sub genres, leading to quite the listening experience. Hedonism Live is one of their only two officially produced live albums and is a shining example of how live music should be performed. The tracks go from fast and enthusiastic to slow and sombre and all merge together into one great continuous experience.

The music itself is instrumentally complex and the band members skill definitely shows. On top of that, the arrangements, which are often done by band members themselves, are excellent. If you enjoy this, do go check out their studio work as well. While I chose this due to their live performance being incredible, their studio work is not without note.

J.S. Bach performed by Pablo Casals - Cello Suites

    Genre: Classical, Baroque

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=166503

Review: Someone on the Internet wrote:
I won't discuss the merits of Pablo Casals' version of Bach's Suites for Solo Cello, other reviewers have already done that. I will note that he ranks in the very top tier out of all the 12 versions I own. My other top tier favorites are Navarra, Fournier, Starker and Thedeen.

I do not own Ma's latest version nor Rostropovich's version, but I have heard them both. I find Ma to be too slick for his own good –he is indeed so technically correct that he plays the notes a bit too perfectly and in doing so somehow loses the essence of the music... if that makes any sense? – Ultimately I do not find Ma convincing, a computer could be programmed to do the same thing. Rostropovich, however, is just the opposite, too sloppy (or some would say too romantic) –he just doesn't sound like Bach to me. I do like a few of his interpretations, but overall I think he misses the mark more than he finds it. I do not mean to suggest that both Ma and Rostropovich do not have their moments or that others have not found them satisfying, but overall there are other performers that just do a better job for me in terms of what I find important. My favorites are not going to be the same as yours all the time. But, at least now you know where I am coming from and where my biases are.

    The Offspring - Americana

    Genre: Punk, Alternative, Rock

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=38994

    Review: Michael Gallucci, AllMusic wrote:
With integrity intact and a hearty combination of poppy punk and wit throughout, the Offspring's fifth album is a raucous ride through America as seen through the eyes of a weary, but still optimistic, young kid. Riffs on political correctness, '70s radio fodder, and suburban disquiet are spread thick on Americana. If the band's targets seem a bit simple and predictable, its music rarely is. The SoCal roots aren't played to a fault, the blend of salsa and alterna-rock sounds natural, and the Offspring pretty much laugh at their culture, as well as themselves, the entire time.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet - At Carnegie Hall

    Genre: Cool Jazz

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=52951

    Review (Thom Jurek, AllMusic):
For all those who have a big axe to grind with Brubeck, for all those who claim the band was only successful because they were predominantly white, or played pop-jazz, or catered to the exotica craze, or any of that, you are invited to have all of your preconceptions, tepid arguments, and false impressions hopelessly torn to shreds by the CD debut of one of the great live jazz albums of the 1960s.

    Oliver Schories - Herzensangelegenheit

    Genre: Electronic, Techno, Tech House

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=72170104

    Review:
In times where electronic music often tends to sound static and soulless, Oliver Schories is one of the few producers able to translate emotional intensity into pads and patterns. Stunning from beginning till end, Herzensangelegenheit is a debut album to be very proud of but first and foremost one of today’s best albums available in the field of melodic house and techno.

Chris Thile, of Nickel Creek fame, released his first major solo album in 2001. A bouncy mix of fun bluegrass at various tempos, it has the same intricate melodies and harmonies found in his Nickel Creek work, augmented by a spectacular backing band. Tons of fun to listen to.

aivi & surasshu - The Black Box

    Genre: chiptune, piano, jazz

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=72436783

    Review:
What can I say about this album? It is by and large one of my favourite albums thus far of 2013. You normally wouldn't associate chiptune with a piano background however this is the rare exception that hits everything just right.

This album really does take you on a journey, for me personally it was a journey into the past. I cannot tell you how many times this album has been on replay for me and for me to put into words how truly I've enjoyed it in the short span of time it's been released would be an injustice.

I will just have to let the What.CD user base decide whether they love it as much as I do. May I also recommend that if you did enjoy this album as much I did that you go and donate to this artist via their bandcamp - they do a pay what you want scheme which is just amazing. I hope this album brings you as much pleasure as it did to me.

Claude VonStroke - Beware of the Bird

    Genre: electronic, house

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=79312

    Review:
San Francisco's Claude VonStroke delivers an absolutely brilliant album: Beware Of The Bird. This album is possibly the greatest dance electronica LP of all time. Capturing a version of electronic music that some people call "minimal", I call this style of music "not annoying". Granted, Beware Of The Bird does contain twitchy synth lines, but it does it in a careful way. Each piece of this record shows tasteful composition, bone-crushing engineering, and will force just about anyone to get up on the dance floor. From an inspiration stand-point, this album seriously makes me want to compose electronic dance music. This is classic house music, and even if you are new to the genre, this album is a guaranteed delight. And finally, Amazon has a CD of this for sale. Beware Of The Bird is history in the making.

    Data Romance - Other

    Genre: Downtempo

    Review:
This is another fantastic recommendation that came to me from lycium, who is probably the one person who not only knows what music I have, but what I don't have. (Note - I guess this came to him through Far, so I'll give credit where credit is due.)

I've been a fan of The XX for a while now, and I'm always on the lookout for music that meshes well with it for mixed playlists - Data Romance is perfect. They surpass The XX in a number of ways, but it's not as easily accessible. This is one of those wonderful albums that builds to impressive intensity in the middle, slowly building at the beginning and then coming down exhausted on the other side.

    Patrick Duff - Luxury Problems

    Genre: Indie, Rock, Folk
    Torrents: torrents.php?id=805014

    Review:
"The man who has chosen to sing his own song, is the man who will sing like a King."

Patrick Duff's first solo album comes 7 years after Strangelove (that oh, so under-appreciated band) called it a day. Always an unusual person, this was his last attempt to fit within the music industry, on a label like EMI, before fully following his own light with the subsequent The Mad Straight Road. I feel this is the best introduction to his solo work, however. The music is eclectic and idiosyncratic within the bounds of the rock/folk/indie genres, and as usual Duff has attracted distinguished collaborators such as Alex Lee, Adrian Utley & Pete Trill. For me, the delight lies in his funny, insightful and poetic lyrics and that odd, rich voice of his—one of those that sound strange at first but then becomes utterly gorgeous, like Morrissey or Billy Corgan. Highlights include the poignant Fucked, "You're the only one who knows how fucked I am, my love", the funny Married with Kids, "She can't sing but she's having a go...", the frozen loveliness of King of the Underworld and Early Morning Birds with Patrick straining the lower limits of his voice. This is the English turn-of-the-century Singer/Songwriter most reminiscent of the spirit of William Blake. There's no higher compliment than that.
