Authoritarian Commandment #1219 - You Will Post Images

Starting next week, all uploads will require an image URL on the upload form.

Why should torrents have images?

Most already do! Staff (and kind users) often add in missing images to new uploads. They add a focal point to torrent pages and look great in collections. Images can communicate something about a torrent, whether it's an intriguing style or a reminder of "hey, that's the book I saw in the store and wanted to pick up." A picture's worth a thousand words, right?

How does this affect uploaders?

Many categories have description generators that will automatically fetch images. Most of the time, these work—but sometimes, other editions of books and such might not return an image. Some categories also don't have generators. Uploaders will be responsible for selecting an appropriate image on the upload form; that counts for all categories. Using browser extensions like images.baconbits.org rehosting or an imgur rehosting add-on (Chrome, Firefox) can make this as easy as right-clicking and pasting in a URL.

What about old uploads?

Old uploads are grandfathered in and do not explicitly require images; they do not need to be reported. However, that doesn't mean that images can't be added! If your editing permissions allow it, feel free to update older uploads with an image.

What kinds of images should go in the Image field?

• Movies, TV, Anime, Games: A poster, promotional image, or disc/game cover should be used, NOT a screenshot from your media.
• Music: The album cover
• Ebooks and Audiobooks: The book cover, box set cover, or Audible/disc cover
• Comics and Magazines: The issue cover
• Graphic Resources: A specimen/sample, promotional image, or (for things like themes) a screenshot
• Applications and Misc: Failing anything else relevant like a cover or promotional image, a screenshot
  
  Also, of course, make sure that your image is rehosted on a whitelisted site.
