    All Members,

As some of you may have already seen, several trackers are requesting their members to change their passwords over the last few months.

BTN has been reviewing its security arrangements and as part of a wider approach will now be implementing several improvements, including support for two factor authentication, and upgrading our password hashing to Bcrypt.

Over the next few days, you will be required to update your password (the system will prompt you to change your password), however before doing so, please consider the following advice and new guidelines:

It is of critical importantance that you do not use the same password for multiple sites; doing so means that if one password is compromised a hacker will be able to steal; or utilise one or more of your accounts where you used the same password. Sometimes you may not even notice that your account has been compromised!

So its a good idea to follow the following guidelines:

Effectively immediately BTN is introducing two Password guidelines:
    1. Your BTN Password should be unique to BTN. You should not use the same password you use for BTN on any other tracker or online service.
    2. Your BTN password should be long and not a single word; this means it should be at least 12 characters long and a group of words or a mix of words and numbers.

Here is a great comic from xkcd to help explain how long passwords can be better than shorter (but harder to remember) passwords:[IMG]

Having Unique and long passwords is a good idea for every internet service you use, whether it be trackers, forums, subscriptions, ebay, paypal, itunes, seedbox logins, account numbers for utilities etc. But remembering them all (even if theyre easy to remember) while making it hard for someone to guess and not using the same one is difficult.

Using a phrase or a group of random words (like in the comic above) can be an easier way to remember your password, such as BroadcastheNetIsAGreatTracker this phrase satisfies the requirements - and provided you only use it at BTN, it'll meet the guideline for it to be unique too. (Please do not use that exact password!). To make your password stronger you can add capitalisation (uppercase and lowercase characters); add some padding characters like full stops, numbers or other characters between each word, or use words from different languages etc.

There are also some great programs around for creating and managing your passwords; BTN recommends KeePass (Windows Only) which is an open source application specifically designed for managing your accounts and passwords. For non-windows users, another great tool is available called Lastpass (windows and just about everything else).

Regardless of which Tool you use (if any) if you are not using a unique and long password when you are asked to change it shortly, please make it secure [IMG]
