For many of our users, seasonal changes are hard to ignore. To help warm What.CD's assorted limbs and hearts, the staff have been working alongside myliu4, elwoodpd, and gordeezycrunch devising fashionable heating aids (also known as swag, booty, plunder, etc.) in anticipation of the frosty months ahead. The gear is being launched over at the The What.CD Online Store, and you can order yours now. We'll check out the update below, but first, here's some information about the store:

    • These links always get buried at the bottom, but you can discuss this update here.
    • The What.CD Online Store (TWOS) is operated by Port Merch, a full-service merchandising outlet for many major music artists. This means that your transactions are safe and secure! Thanks, Port Merch.
    • TWOS accepts PayPal and all major credit cards.
    • You can check out all available TWOS products by visiting the link above, or by scoping out our on-site Store Gallery.
    • Downloadable products like This CD, The First have very low overhead costs. If you aren't interested in physical gear and your goal is to donate as much of your contribution as is possible, the vast majority of what you spend on downloadable products will directly fund What.CD.
    • Want to help out, but don't want to buy stuff from the store? Check out one of our approved donation methods by visiting our Donate Page.
    • You can show your gear off here!
    • Did you buy stickers? Visit this thread and show us where you've put them!

[Buy Now :: White Mug] — [Buy Now :: Navy Shirt] — [Buy Now :: White Shirt] — [Buy Now :: Slate Hoodie]

    View Design Cards: Show

    1 - Download Mug 2.0:
We heard your pleas. Ever since the release of myliu4's original Download Mug, the community has been clamoring for its return. Wait no more! We've brought back the satirically slick design on an 11 oz., ironstone ceramic mug (glossy interior/exterior). The original mug was one of the store's best sellers—and it's likely that history will repeat itself—yet the news is great for anyone who manages to snag one in time: once technology allows for fluid downloading, you'll have the perfect ironic container. Until then, stick to hot cocoa.
Limited Edition: Approximately 550 mugs are available.

    2 - What's Going Down? Shirts:
There have been a number of terrific design contests, and we've received a number of awesome design submissions. The unfortunate reality is that not all of these designs can be printed. But one popular design that undeservedly slipped through the cracks was elwoodpd's What's Going Down? - a design submitted during our very first TWOS design contest! To give elwoodpd's work the attention it rightly deserves, we've dusted it off and printed it on two American Apparel Fine Jersey Short Sleeve T-Shirts. The first print is white over a navy blue shirt, and the second is black over a white shirt. These are going to go fast, so grab yours while stock remains!
Limited Edition: Approximately 250 navy blue shirts and 250 white shirts are available.

    3 - Rippy & Scratchy Hoodie:
The great gordeezycrunch has become one of our top designers thanks to the fantastic Rippy & Scratchy design launched in July. Loud and clear: more gordeezy. But you've also made it clear that you want more hoodies. Voila! Thanks to the marvels of modern science, you now have gordeezy-hoodies. Slip this slate grey Rippy & Scratchy hoodie (black print on breast) over your What's Going Down? shirt for superior warming action (optional: simultaneously drink hot stuff from your Download Mug 2.0 to take self-warming to new, special levels). The design is printed on an American Apparel Flex Fleece Zip Hoodie, and it wants to enjoy a respectful, mutually beneficial relationship with your body this winter.
Limited Edition: Approximately 150 hoodies are available.

    4 - Oh, and...

Elephant Revival - These Changing Skies

    Genre: Folk, Bluegrass, Americana

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=72578861

Review: ‘These Changing Skies’ is a phenomenally sophisticated, hauntingly gorgeous masterpiece for the group.
If it doesnt make you smile then nothing will.
The floating melodies throughout the album and Celtic-heavy instrumental tracks meld into some of their more pensive songs, dreamlike.

Leonard Cohen - The Essential Leonard Cohen

    Genre: blues, folk, rock

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=69913

Review: The tracks on this two-CD, 31-song anthology, spanning Cohen's career from his 1967 debut album through 2002's Ten New Songs, were chosen by Cohen himself. It could thus be regarded as an accurate mirror of how Cohen sees his own career path and catalog highlights.

    Fortunetellers - Get Them Good

    Genre: Indie pop

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=72457381

Review: “Make It Easy”, a sparkling track from Fortunetellers’ recent release, “Get Them Good”, should keep fingers snapping all summer long. Bouncy and brisk, this instantly likeable slice of twee pop makes an act of seduction sound like a nurse coaxing a frightened kitten down from a treetop. Although the mix foregrounds the band’s sprightly rhythm section, giving the song a skipping, danceable groove, there isn’t a lot going on below the waist. Singer Kathleen Cruger’s lovely vocals are all sugar and no spice; this one comes from a spotless place where “I wanna hold your hand” has a strictly literal meaning. But Cruger’s guileless, fresh-faced boldness—her offer to write a letter conjures images of a young Wes Anderson heroine, complete with personalized stationery—adds greatly to the song’s appeal, allowing “Make It Easy” to flaunt a big heart without overdoing it on the cute.

Hunter's Ground - No God But the Wild

    Genre: black.metal, usbm

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=72517775

Review: Hunter's Ground has really captured something here -- No God But the Wild feels fresh and memorable, packed with ferocity and hunger. The clever compositions make it hard to get bored with it; every time I listen I hear something new. This album comes highly recommended for those who like thoughtful black metal.

    Gary Higgins - Red Hash

    Genre: Psychedelic Folk, Freak Folk

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=107033

Review: A beautifully wrought record of sun-drenched folk musings courtesy of Gary Higgins, Red Hash was reissued in 2005 on Drag City to great acclaim. This is a "Buried Treasure" that lives up to its reputation. - Ariel

John Coltrane - A Love Supreme

    Genre: Jazz, Post-Bop, Avant-Garde

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=3542

Review: One of the greatest artistic works of all time. Not sure what else to say; if you haven't listened to this at least once, from start to finish, you need to do so! In my ears, this was the pinnacle of Coltrane's career, much more 'free' than his early works, but not flying off wildly into space quite yet.

Devin Townsend - Ocean Machine: Biomech

    Genre: Progressive Metal

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=71369

Review: various reviewers at the Metal Archives wrote: "This isn’t just music, this is life explained in detail to those who have only gotten so far. The record has a gravitational pull as strong as the Earth’s, keeping us firmly rooted to the inner workings of the instrumentation as the experimentation fluctuates between repetition and variety."

Ustad Massano Tazi - Maroc - Musique Classique Andalouse de Fès

Genre: Nouba, Arab Classical Music, Morocco, World Music

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=72564922

Review: Arab-Andalusian music is a classical genre with historic links to Persia, Iraq, and Moorish Spain. A highly lauded Arab-Andalusian contributor, the ninth century music theorist and musician Ziryab, is credited with having developed the classical suite known as the nouba and the theoretical "tree of modes." On Maroc: Musique Classiqe Andalouse de Fes, two Arab-Andalusian noubas from Fez, Morocco, are performed by Ustad Massano Tazi and his group of five accomplished vocalists and instrumentalists. With relaxed confidence and musical prowess, this sextet bangs out "Nouba Hijaz al Kabir" and "Nouba Istihilal." The former piece lasts for over 50 minutes and consists of numerous rhythmic cadences, instrumental interludes, and vocal variations. Physiologically speaking, it is traditionally played in order to call forth "the overall lymphatic tendency." The closing "Nouba Istihilal" is anchored in the six-beat qoddam rhythm and is played to honor both guests and the rising moon. The accompanying liner notes are helpful in that they provide a historical context for the recordings and introduce such complex concepts as the tree of modes and its relation to healing and "sound alchemy." Overall, the enchanting Maroc: Musique Classiqe Andalouse de Fes captures a solid performance by Ustad Massano Tazi and his band of cohorts.

    Severence - Hidden Ceiling

    Genre: Dub Techno, Ambient, Drone

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=72575006

    Review:
Cloudy layers of blurred sound snippets tower up in long hall rooms while the underlying rhythm is created not by a beat but the slow rolling of soundwaves. Severence tweaked his sounds until they meshed smoothly, and even dub elements are sensitively integrated while avoiding every kind of cliché. Hidden Ceilings invites us to an exploration of seldomly accessed soundscapes that want to be carefully discovered and wandered through, not as an easy Sunday afternoon trip but an exciting "journey into sound".
And just like the great Morton Feldman, Severence considers that sometimes the sounds that are left unplayed are just as important. Calm, even silence is a significant element of this record.
    A silence full of tension.

Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism

    Genre: Indie, Alternative, Rock.

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=129118

    Review:
Death Cab for Cutie's forth studio album is widely regarded as one of the best of the decade.
It has been with me for just over ten years now and never feels tired.

Philip Glass - 1000 Airplanes on the Roof

Genre: Classical, Minimalist, Opera, Electronic, Scifi

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=129158

    Review:
My favorite Glass piece, and that's saying a lot, because he's my inspiration for pretty much everything in life. Remember the aria in The Fifth Element? Imagine how it felt to watch that scene. Now imagine feeling that way for 55 minutes.

Yura Yura Teikoku - Hollow Me / Beautiful

    Genre: Rock, Indie

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=72259337

    Review:
Yura Yura Teikoku's final album saw them finish their transition from garage psych masters to a more angular funk/disco/dance-punk sound (mixed in with soft rock, pop, post-rock, and more). DFA released this album in the US, and it manages to sound perfectly at home on that label while also standing apart as a truly unique release within their catalog.

Had Yura Yura Teikoku sung in English, I'm confident they would have been huge in North America. Don't let the Japanese lyrics stop you: this is the best album by one of the most consistently excellent bands in recent history.

Though Rocketbot is defunct, its legacy continues on as Arlum Village. Described as a musical collective with roots in Indianapolis and Chicago, front-man Scott Archer has teamed up with ex-members of Rocketbot and current members of Indianapolis-based alternative rock band, Great Future to record a new EP, The Ballad of Paka. A conceptual recording alluding to the early and “wild west” days of the World Wide Web, the EP follows a man named Paka who battles wolves and his own mortality.

Queens of The Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf

Genre: Alternative, Rock, Stoner Rock, ...

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=27716

    Review:
One of my favorite albums of all time, Songs for the Deaf is Stoner metal back in the form of the third LP from Queens of the Stone Age, who are supplemented for this release (and supporting tour) by drummer Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana) and former Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan.
