By now, you have heard of the video streaming app called Popcorn Time. The app has been in the news a lot lately because it allows users to stream movies that are barely out of the theaters. Being one of the largest piracy sites available, the application has gained quite a bit of attention. Right now, Popcorn Time is gaining traction all over the world, and as the catalog grows the popularity is only going to grow with it. The platform looks very similar to any other video streaming application, but offers you content without you having to actually pay for it.

Some online video sites look kind of dirty and make you feel guilty just for looking at them. According to sources, in the Netherlands, Popcorn Time has a larger user base than that of Netflix. Even though it might be the only place in the world that Netflix is being beat in terms of streaming video, that is about to change as users look for more options to find movies for free. According to one report, Popcorn Time usage statistics have tripled between July of last year and January of this year. As you can imagine entertainment industry is quite interested in the popularity of this app.

Before pirating movies was very popular, getting all the music you wanted for free was just as popular. Services like Napster showed up online, allowing users to download all the music they wanted without having to pay a penny for it. Today, services like Spotify, Pandora and Amazon Prime Music allow you to listen to music with a subscription and only with few advertisements. Popcorn Time lets you access just about everything available on the Internet. It operates using a bit torrent, which is a service that allows many people to download larger files, in smaller pieces before viewing them.

Popcorn time, amazingly operates on zero income. According to officials, there are only 20 people that work with the application and only in their free time. The founder or the company’s official spokesperson claims that they are a community and does not think it will ever be a proper business. According to the spokesperson, the application runs on no funding, has no business model and is run out of the pockets of the small community behind it.

As a surprise to some, popcorn time doesn’t even have advertising on the application. Most other applications like the ones for music have advertisements throughout the day so they can help pay for the use of the service. One of the other questions is, if the service is safe from lawsuits. Lawyers say it is a completely legal service. Because the app does not provide any of the actual content, and only just the the means to actually access the content could be the reason it is legal.
