We have suffered a second peerleaking attack, exactly like the one perpetuated against us two days ago. Please see the front page announcement for the full details of the situation. To be clear -- this was not an attack by a copyright agency, but by a degenerate individual attempting to harm our community.
We regret to inform you that you were one of the people potentially compromised by this breech. Receiving this notice does not mean you were definitively affected. We are proactively sending out this message to anyone who might have been exposed.
Please stay calm. And there is no guarantee that you will be adversely affected.
That said, we encourage you to be proactive as a form of harm reduction. We strongly encourage you to change the port your torrent client is using. Then restart your torrent client. This will invalidate your entry on the peer list, and prevent you from getting caught up on any new connections from this leak. This is the single most important action you can take to protect yourself at this time. If you need help doing so please reach out and contact us (see the end of this message).
We apologize for this breech of security. This attack was possible because of the underlying way the torrent protocol functions -- not something unique to PTP. To the best of our knowledge, such an attack is unprecedented. We had not seen it in the wild before it surfaced in an attack against BTN a few days ago.
Rest assured the security of you, our users, is our top priority. We are in the process of implementing additional security measures to automatically identify and mitigate such attacks in the future.
If you have any questions, or need assistance, please reach out to us in the designated forum thread. Alternatively you can contact us via staffpm, or irc.
