    R.I.P. Gabriel García Márquez (1927-2014)

The void left in contemporary literature by the passing of Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez is as vast as the continent whose history he mythologized in a career spanning more than half a century. In recognition of a masterful body of work that includes such classics as One Hundred Years of Solitude, The Autumn of the Patriarch, and Love in the Time of Cholera, all ebooks by Márquez will be freeleech for the next 48 hours (this does not include audiobooks).

Márquez, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982, pioneered the genre known as magical realism, in which the real and the fantastic converge and entwine. He said that his métier sprang from Latin America's history of romantic revolutionaries and brutal dictators, with people of all classes victimized by centuries of hunger, sickness, and violence. "Poets and beggars, musicians and prophets, warriors and scoundrels, all creatures of that unbridled reality, we have had to ask but little of imagination," he said in his Nobel acceptance speech. "For our crucial problem has been a lack of conventional means to render our lives believable."

The legacy of Márquez includes 16 works of fiction in novels, novellas, and short story collections. He also published seven nonfiction books, including News of a Kidnapping, which chronicles narco-terrorist activities of the Medellín Cartel in the early 1990s. Unfortunately, the body of his work has not been released in retail ebook formats, but you can find his principal works here. We encourage you to join in memorializing his life and books by uploading titles we lack as well as downloading from our collection.
