Linear Movement - On The Screen

    Kép

Last year two excellent compilations have been released that collected electronic DIY music from the late 1970s and early 80s: 'The Minimal Wave Tapes: Vol. 1' and 'Cold Waves and Minimal Electronics, Vol. 1'. Now often referred to as minimal wave or minimal synth, this relatively short-lived genre ran concurrent with guitar-based post-punk and early new wave from the late 1970s to the mid 80s without enjoying the commercial success of either. Featuring the analog synthesizer as a foundation, minimal wave tracks were fleshed out with little more than a drum machine, vocals, and occasionally, a bass line. The limited sonic palette arguably enabled the ultimate DIY movement, with solo and duo minimal synth projects cropping up all across Europe.

Linear Movement is a Belgian act that was featured on both comps. I immediately fell in love with 'Night In June' on the Cold Waves compilation when I first heard it. The track has a poppier sound than the rest of the album and it has a great melancholy feel to it. Linear Movemant never did a proper album. 'On The Screen' is an anthology released in 2008 by the aptly called Minimal Wave label. Overall it captures the same mood as 'Night In June'. Unfortunately, that track itself isn't featured, giving you all the more reason to check out 'Cold Waves' as well.

The thirteenth release on Minimal Wave is Linear Movement's 'On The Screen' LP, a collection of songs originally slated for release in 1983. Linear Movement is Belgian mastermind Peter Bonne (A Split-Second, Twilight Ritual, Autumn) joined by Peter Koutstaal, and Lieve Van Steerteghem on vocals. Some tracks appear on the exquisite Pulse Music cassette (released by the Micrart Group) while the rest are previously unreleased. Linear Movement was featured on V/A The Lost Tapes LP with their highly acclaimed The Game, described as an "unstoppable pop song". Due to so much interest in this song, we decided a full LP needed to be released and so we present it to you: hand-numbered, limited pressing on 180 gram vinyl, and accompanied by a large glossy postcard photograph of the band live. These songs are perfect for the dance floor and for home listening too!
