Serge Gainsbourg is best known for his groundbreaking work of the early seventies, most notably 'Histoire de Melody Nelson'. By the time this album was he released he already had quite a career behind him. Gainsbourg started off as a beatnik jazz crooner in the late fifties. This compilation captures the best tracks from 1958 to 1964. It's a light playful affair with musical influences ranging from cabaret to cinema to rock 'n' roll. The music is clearly a product of it's time, yet the clever arrangements and effortless delivery still make it a treat decades later. Essential for anybody who's into vocal jazz, french music or the phenomenon that is Serge Gainsbourg.
