Waffles Staff Picks - May Edition

Welcome to the May edition of the Waffles.fm Staff Picks. Please remember we do not look to balance genres or purposely seek out diversity - these are simply albums by bands that we love, and hope that you find something you enjoy as well. Note that each pick may be an individual track, or an entire album (for the purpose of the theme). In every case, however, the entire album will be FL.

    Theme:

    olenpriit

    Artist: Zomby
Album: Where Were U in 92
    Track: Euphoria

I drive around a lot. I also listen to a lot of music. Combining these two hobbies has led to my car being awash with CDs. Most CDs I listen to only once but there are a few which have survived the test of time. There are so many obvious choices to pick from with "Journey" music so I'm sticking to one which is easily in my top 5 most listened to albums in the car yet isn't likely to be a regular choice among roadtrippers. I've also burnt a CD with just "Euphoria" on it some 18 times because it makes driving with drunk people fun. This track/album is meant mainly for short distances. Like driving to McDonalds.

    Lorentz

    Artist: Mondo Grosso
    Album: MG4
    Track: Star Suite I-III

As a country-bumpkin who later on grew up in urban cityscapes, only to feel like I should go back to where I grew up in, these songs (which is sort of just one song, split into multiple tracks) echoes with me on road of growing up. Maybe not so much in terms of consumerism the songs imply, but I do miss the stars.

    izmo

    Artist: The Teenagers
    Track: "Sunset Beach"

The verses tell a spoken word story.

    lostsupper

    Artist: Saves the Day
Track: The Vast Spoils Of America (From The Badlands Through The Ocean)

Travelling enriches us. I've seen many countries and cultures, but nothing compares to road-tripping with friends during summers of young adulthood. This song is as pure an approximation of the feelings I had during those journeys as can be achieved.

    Woodenhead

    Artist: Mono
Album: Hymn To The Immortal Wind

This concept album (one with no lyrics! - it comes with a short story written exclusively for this album, as a booklet) is about the journey through time and life, and how one's memories transcends that. It's also a love story (of course). And perhaps more than anything, it's an album that will take your feelings on a roller-coaster of a trip, throughout its entirety: composed of beautiful/sad/uplifitng angelic movements and frantic-crushing-distorted-wall-of-guitar crescendos - all while utilizing a 24-piece orchestra - Mono will lead you down a path which many times crosses the border between joy and sorrow. A musical journey, indeed.

    condon313

    Artist: Tigers Jaw
    Track: I Saw Water

There are lots of album that are fun to belt out on a road trip. Tigers Jaw takes the cake for me in how melodramatic it is ("I'd like to think that I could work it out some, but I want to be put into the ground"). Bonus points for delicious album cover.

    kaishin521

    Artist: Electric Light Orchestra
    Track: Yours Truly, 2095

Imagine if you took a journey into the future -- what do you think people will mostly be doing a hundred years from now?
If your answer was "date robots" then I think you would like this track.

    Vitz

    Artist: Ed Harrison
    Track: Tin Soldiers

This track is a journey and it gets intense. Part of a soundtrack for a Half-Life 2 mod, this was released for free and never even got featured in the mod itself, but the large 27-track ordeal is a marvellous thing created by a young artist called Edward James Harrison.

    radicaldino

    Artist: BT
    Album: This Binary Universe

a journey through spacetime and the mind, an experimental album, this binary universe combines vast ambient soundscapes with technical glitch edits and beautiful orchestral arrangements. grab your best headphones, amp and enjoy the ride.

    Sukiyaki

    Artist: The Prodigy
Track: Music for the Jilted Generation

This is the first album that I listened to in what has now become a long list of electronic releases. I first heard this album in 2003, over ten years ago, and it has come to shape my understanding and enjoyment of music as a whole. Thanks to music like this, I started a journey to discover everything I could about different genres and artists. This journey still isn't over, but it wouldn't have started if it weren't for The Prodigy.
