    Happy Birthday: Part II!

Apologies for the downtime and delay. In light of this, the staff have extended the freeleech tokens' effect to last 96 hours instead of 48. No matter what happens, you should now have plenty of time to grab your torrent before the token expires. Without further ado, let's continue the week-long celebration of What.CD's birthday!

    Staff Interviews

We've come a long way in this four year journey, and many staffers have worked tirelessly to make our beloved tracker as successful as it is today. Every birthday, a handful of prominent community members to conduct interviews with the staff to help shed light on what happens behind the scenes. We hope you enjoy the results! The following interviews are also indexed, along with all past interviews, on this wiki.

    Johann Sebastian Bach - Keyboard Concertos 1, 2, & 4 (Murray Perahia)

    Genre: Baroque classical

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=244017

Review - 15 seconds into the first keyboard concerto, Murray Perahia's piano bubbles up, and from that moment on the recording is one of the most glorious pieces of classical music I've heard. Every second is a shivering jolt of ecstasy. While the first keyboard concerto is easily my favorite, the other two are stellar as well. I don't really have the vocabulary or the knowledge to talk about classical music in any real depth—I'll just leave off here and let the music say the rest.

    Agalloch - The Mantle

Genre: Metal, Black Metal, Folk Metal, Dark Metal

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=30051

Review - I'm not really sure what genre you might call The Mantle. Blackened atmospheric progressive dark ambient epic folk forest metal, maybe? Whatever you call it, The Mantle is a brilliant work of art, and I think there's something here even for non-metal fans with open minds. From gentle classical guitars and hushed clean vocals to razor-edged, vaulted-ceiling riffs that seem to spiral around raspy black howls, mingling with them and floating to a distant sky, from pulsing blast beats and squalls of windburnt rhythm to shimmering ambient passages, the storms and calms of The Mantle are all frozen over with chilly beauty, evoking a lonely walk through the woods in winter. The Mantle is simply one of the best albums ever recorded; one of very few albums I consider 'perfect records' (and Agalloch one of even fewer artists to create more than one such perfect record), and that's worthy of a staff pick.

Fionn Regan - 100 Acres of Sycamore

    Genre: folk

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=72027163

    Review -
While trying to find some numbers to quantify my love for this Irish singer-songwriter, I checked my Last.fm scrobbles: Fionn Regan has been my most-played artist for the last year. 520 of those plays comes from the last three months, or, generally, from when his last album dropped. It was very difficult to decide what to choose; his entire oeuvre is desert island music to me, containing lyrically described conceptions of a world both brighter and darker than ours, a world with a beautiful surface and a cold underbelly. 100 Acres of Sycamore is by far his most lush, sweetest album, with a full, orchestrated sound and grand melodic landscapes that are a ways away from austere acoustic undertakings like his Campaign Button EP or tracks from his debut album, The End of History. Regan is playing several shows in New York City this month that I highly encourage you to go see.

    Beirut - The Rip Tide

    Genre: Indie, Folk, Balkan, Gypsy

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=72001905

Review - Beirut, led by the musical wonder Zach Condon, has brought to the table albums whose geographic influence is unmistakable. It began in Eastern Europe with Condon's Balkan influenced Gulag Orkestar (perhaps his most pervasive sound from album to album). He then traveled to France and put together The Flying Club Cup. This was followed up with an addicting EP (March of the Zapotek) that drew influence heavily from Mexico. The Rip Tide doesn't quite have that distinct geographic influence that the other releases had; instead the album takes elements of all his past travels and melts them together with more American Pop than has previously been seen by this band. This is a great new album that deserves some ear time. See them live and devour their discography while you're at it.

    Android Lust - Resolution

    Genre: Electronic, Industrial

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=127742

    Review -

In 1997 when the electronic underground was still seething with bursts of originality, emerged the genre's first one woman electro project. From the singular mind of Shikhee, Resolution is an album that is lush, richly textured, and revels in the sonic expressions of the beauty in decay. Dark, sensual, and twisted around a spike of elegant fury, this music is compelling even for the most inhuman of mind.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra With Vernon Handley - Holst: The Planets, St. Paul's Suite

    Genre: Classical

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=219548

Review - The Planets and St. Paul's Suite are not technically difficult pieces, however, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's phrasing, balance, and dynamics make these suites a joy to hear. Few know The Planets better than Vernon Handley, whose mentor was Adrian Boult. In 1916, Holst asked conductor Boult to listen to his two-piano version of The Planets. Boult was the first to conduct this suite and many consider his 1971 recording of The Planets as the best ever recorded. However, this recording by Vernon Handley and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was chosen because its vibrancy and tone compares well to the aforementioned performances and because it includes Holst's lesser known St. Paul's Suite.

    NousWanderer’s Pick

Russ Chimes - Midnight Club EP

    Genre: Electronic, Electro, Dance, House

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=71836012

    Review - NousWanderer wrote:

The Midnight Club EP is inseparable from the three-part music video which preceded its official release. Before listening, please give the video a gander. Directed by the increasingly relevant Saman Keshavarz, the short film is suffused with manic energy that can only be described as breathless. Keshavarz carefully and inventively tracks the music’s contours as he explodes and recombines a homage-laden narrative one beat at a time. Dialogue, absent, goes completely unmissed; the quasi-Euro, hipster-chic characters are immediately identifiable, their performances veering between natural dramatization and stylized caricature. The modern love / detective / revenge plot is tightly controlled and edited kaleidoscopically, with visuals as rapid-fire as the audio is layered. Small, winking details reveal themselves upon repeat viewings. Here, there's a synergy of soundtrack and story that's not to be missed. Above all else, Chimes concerns himself with producing lush, unpretentiously danceable hits; there's a sincerity present here that Kavinsky and others lack. For anyone even marginally interested in electronic or dance, the Midnight Club EP is a joy to hear and a delight to move to.

Ellen & The Escapades - Of All The Times

    Genre: Folk

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=72060185

Review - Although folk isn't my usual genre of choice, this EP by Ellen and the Escapades is a real gem in my collection. The music has hints of Americana, especially on the EP’s standout track for me ‘This Ace I’ve Burned’, while being rooted in British folk. The lead singer Ellen Smith’s Yorkshire accented vocals are wonderful and distinctive, and I think are what makes this EP so fantastic.
The band are often compared to Mumford and Sons, and quite rightly so. Each of the four tracks are full of classy musicianship and feature beautiful vocals from Smith.
A really warm and enjoyable EP, and a delight to listen to.

Ervin Schulhoff with Kocian Quartet & Prazak Quartet - Chamber Music

    Genre: Classical, 20th Century, Czech

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=72066960

    Review - Classics Today

Simply stunning performances by members of the Prazak and Kocian Quartets (and friends) should win many happy listeners for this witty and colorful music. If you ever thought that a Duo for Violin and Cello must be dull, then you have to hear Schulhoff's outrage

    rhubarb's Pick

    Paul Kalkbrenner - Berlin Calling

Genre: Electronic, Techno, Electro, Tech House

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=261026

    Review - rhubarb wrote:

'Sky and Sand' is a song many people will recognize. A bit Moby-esque, and definitely not the album's strongest track. But don't give up! What remains is fantastic. This album is great for casual listening or, as I prefer, for dancing around in your underwear as you get ready in the morning. It's relaxing yet upbeat, mellow and hopeful. Kalkbrenner's tone is uplifting and he'll make you want to bop your head, even in a crowded subway. This is an album for summer nights. Now that summer has ended for many of us, this is a great reminder of the beach, the waves, and...mangos (one of my favourite tracks on the album).

    refreshingapathy’s Pick

Johnny Booth - The Sagua EP

    Genre: hardcore, metal, math.metal

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=72008333

Review - I'm a metal guy, through and through, and Johnny Booth just makes me giggle like a little kid. Johnny Booth gets your attention with groovy riffs and great lyrics, and then punches you in the face with a breakdown. The best fusion between metal, math rock, and hardcore, Booth keeps going after many bands have gone home for the night. I met these guys in college, and I still drive 250+ miles to see them live. Their years touring and writing and electrifying stage presence will only make their upcoming full-length even better.
This is an album to listen to when you're angry, when you want to get angry, or when you just want to move.
