    Happy Birthday: Part III!

Welcome to day three of our week-long celebration of What.CD's birthday! Today we'd like to turn our attention to the amazing users who comprise our community. All active users contribute to the site by supporting its immense catalogue, but today we acknowledge two groups of users that go a step further to make this site a thriving community.

    Community Questionnaire

A few weeks ago, the What.CD Staff sent out a questionnaire to some of the community's prominent members (both old and new) to collect their thoughts on an array of topics. Responses have been filtering in since that time, and we're now pleased to present the results. We received 81 completed questionnaires, and these have been grouped for your perusal at this wiki index. Users who want to discuss the responses or answer the questions themselves will be able to do so in a discussion page within the next day. Thanks to everyone who sent in a response!

Blu Mar Ten - Natural History

Review - Can't even explain how much I enjoyed this album. It's so colorful and full of melodies that will blow you away!

    SupDimForFer's Pick

Various Artists - Schoolhouse Rock: The Box Set

    Genre: Folk, Educational

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=624230

Review - Gina Boldman (for allmusic.com) wrote:

This essential box set includes the four individual discs -- Grammar Rock, Science Rock, America Rock and Multiplication Rock -- as well as non-album tracks such as "Where the Money Goes," "Number Cruncher," "Software" and "Hardware," and covers by Goodness ("Electricity, Electricity") and the Lemonheads ("My Hero, Zero"). The ultimate collection for Schoolhouse Rock completists.

    alderaan's Pick

Viva Voce - The Future Will Destroy You

    Genre: psychedelic.rock, alternative.rock, indie.rock

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=71976247

Review - Matt Collar, allmusic wrote:

Viva Voce's 2011 release The Future Will Destroy You is an expansive and somewhat slow-burning mix of the indie rock, psych rock, and pop sounds they've delved into over the years. [...] Once again centering on the married duo of singer/guitarist Anita Robinson and drummer Kevin Robinson, tracks like the Yo La Tengo-ish "Analog Woodland Radio" and atmospheric lo-fi dance number "Diamond Mine" are perfect afternoon car-trip tracks that find vocalist Robinson evincing something like a combination of Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval and Stevie Nicks.

    Soliq's Pick

    Moonsorrow - Kivenkantaja

Genre: Metal, Folk Metal, Viking Metal, Epic Heathen Metal

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=9706

Review - Summary - Don the nearest suit of chain mail, equip sword and shield, and mount noble steed, it’s time for Viking metal’s finest, and you best be prepared. What more could you expect from the sound the band self-describes as "epic heathen metal"?

    caaok's Pick

Sam Roberts - We Were Born in a Flame

    Genre: Alternative, Rock

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=29659

Review - I love this album. I first discovered Sam Roberts when he came to play a gig at a local university. I didn't really know his music, though most Canadians my age grew up having listened to his single "Brother Down", present on this album. What immediately impressed me was the way he made songs that are quiet and folksy at heart into catchy, upbeat tunes. I've never really found another artist that sounds similar, and I hope you guys enjoy!

    DeepseaTorpedo's Pick

Eva Cassidy - Live at the Blues Alley

    Genre: Pop-rock, blues.

    Torrent: torrents.php?id=54571

Review Besides the tunes being mostly well known standards which may not be of general appeal, this album is a jewel for many other reasons. The main one being the incredible voice of Eva Cassidy and her singular way of conveying emotions. Very few singers have ever reached this level of sensitivity, yet having a wonderful voice timbre, no tricks nor pyrotechnics.

Above & Beyond - Group Therapy

Genre: Trance, Vocal Trance, Progressive Trance

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=71985915

    Review:
Group Therapy is the second artist album of the British dance act Above & Beyond, whose first album, Tri-State was once picked by alderaan in a previous round of staff picks. This is one of the few CDs I actually bought with my own hard money, and it was well worth it. From the first track 'Filmic', the beautiful, melodic introduction to the album, I was hooked. This is an album that you can easily listen multiple times to, and it grows on you every single time. I'll just leave you with these:
"The biggest artist album of the year" 5/5 ????? Mixmag
"The emotion poured into these tracks is hard to fake" DJ Magazine

    Suuns - Zeroes QC

Genre: Indie, Experimental, Electronic, Post Punk, Shoegaze

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=71821042

    Review - NME wrote:

Straightaway, what’s so appealing about this album is the double-barrel hellfire tactic the four-piece employ on almost every song. We’re talking half-dirge rock, half-glitchy electronica, split 50/50 and pushed full throttle. Impressively, they manage to make straddling this fence seem as comfy as sitting on your bestest sofa. Opener ‘Armed For Peace’ is probably the best example of this, stop-starting in a fit of bastardised electro gloopyness before erupting with a frankly gnarly burst of Led Zep-apeing guitar. It’s a mighty mix, and the band coolly know a good thing when they stumble upon it. Essentially, they repeat this process ad infinitum for the rest of the album.

    Galaxie 500 - On Fire

    Genre: Dream Pop, psychedelic, experimental

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=25745

Review - Galaxie 500 are the greatest band you've probably never heard of--really. If only critical reviews and best-ever lists sold albums, they'd be wildly rich and famous. Alas, like so many of the greats, Galaxie 500's problem was that they were at least 20 years ahead of their time. What stands out to the listener at first is that nothing stands out--vocals, percussion, guitar and bass are all given the exact same weight--no vocals or lead singer at the fore. This gives their sound a rich, textured, dreamy updated Velvet Underground sound that few bands have managed to ever truly imitate, mainly because the band weren't doing anything on purpose, they were just raw young musicians creating sounds that they liked. Their strength was in their membership--Dean Wareham, Damon Krukowski and Naomi Wang had all been friends since childhood. On one end of the scale Naomi has a voice like an angel, and Dean has a wailing, keening, eerie voice that when put together with Damon's backing vocals all meet on some alien soundscape that evokes nostalgia, longing and something just beyond the mind's reach. They manage to craft a sound that is at once beautiful and still, and at the same time rocks out wildly. It's just the way they've mixed it, all of that wild chaos blends with the beauty to create a unified whole--pieces that shouldn't fit together do so, and to gorgeous, timelesss effect. This album not only is one of the small group of Pitchfork's Perfect 10s, but was also voted 16th Best Album of the 80's by Pitchfork. I can't give it a number myself, I just know that just by listening to it endlessly, it's become part of my DNA.

    Ronald Jenkees - Disorganized Fun

    Genre: Alternative, Eletronic, indie, hip.hop

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=551401

Review - Ever had one of those moments that catch you completely off guard? Listening to Ronald Jenkees' debut self titled album does just that. It instantly commands you to sit up and pay attention.
Based on Ronald's Youtube performances I expected his album would be good, but I didn't expect it to be amazing. Deep inside this cap wearing, easy-attitude apparent goof-ball lays the soul of an accomplished musician. Who knew the unassuming geek had it in him?
This album could have easily been a series of FL Studio loops with some crazy keyboard solos layered over top, but thankfully this isn't the case. Instead there are very well thought out arrangements that could easily satisfy the most discerning of instrumental music aficionados.
That said, the last two of the fourteen tracks (which seem slightly out of place to have been included on this album) are not instrumental with Ronald's unique rapping ability taking the serious edge away. The most notable being '56k Rap', where Ronald tells the humorous story of buying a 100mhz Dell with 56k modem and being the master of the Internet, performed with the attitude of an online gangsta. It works surprisingly well.
The insane improv keyboard solos Ronald is famous for are not featured as heavily as you would have thought, if his Youtube performances are anything to go by. But that should not by any means discourage you.
The 14 tracks cover a broad range of moods, but Ronald makes no apologies for a preference towards the easy listening style of 'phat' beats which compliment a well generated atmosphere.
On the subject of atmosphere, there is a movie soundtrack quality to a lot of the tracks, and if he were interested Ronald could probably forge a career in said arena.

Catherine Christer Hennix - The Electric Harpsichord

    Genre: Minimal, Experimental, Drone

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=71801110&torrentid=29109290

    Review
This gem is a truly 20th century masterpiece.
Although first released in the seventies it didn't loose
any of its overwhelming and seductive qualities.
    Very very special!

Curve - Pink Girl With The Blues

    Genre: Shoegaze, Rock, Electronic Dance

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=339973

    Review
"Pink Girl With The Blues" only appears on this single, which is puzzling, as it is, in my opinion, the best Curve ever recorded. With a driving beat, a wash of noise, glitzy production and solid rock delivery, it was a surprise to many people that it didn't appear on their 1998 album Come Clean along with the slinky mid-tempo number "Recovery". The slower, darker "Black Delilah" finishes things up.

    The Gathering - Souvenirs

    Genre: Trip Rock

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=111367

    Review - www.leftoffthedial.com/Gathering_Souvenirs.htm wrote:

Souvenirs is another major success for an innovative band that has repeatedly proved its brilliance. Whether you are a fan of Therion, Radiohead, or Bjork, Souvenirs is an album for you and for all forward-thinking music fans. It is also an album for those who simply like to put on a pair of headphones and lose their world to an hour of beautiful music. Souvenirs is so pretty, so absorbing, and so musically interesting, that I cannot help but give it my highest recommendation.

    This Heat - This Heat

    Genre: Experimental Rock, Post-Punk

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=42533

Review - 4.5/5 by Dean McFarlane from AllMusic wrote:

This British group could neither be called post-punk nor progressive rock, yet This Heat was one of the most influential groups of the late '70s. They created uncanny experimental rock music that has many similarities in approach to German pioneers such as Can and Faust. Other groundbreaking independent groups such as Henry Cow and Wire may be their only peers, and much later This Heat also became profoundly influential on the '90s genre known as post-rock. Their angular juxtapositions of abrasive guitar, driving rhythms, and noise loops on the opening cut, "Horizontal Hold," preempt much later activity in the electronica and drum'n'bass scenes. The outstanding "24 Track Loop" is based around a circular drum pattern that could have been a late-'90s jungle cut were it not recorded in late-'70s London, long before such strategies were even dreamed of in breakbeat music. This album is a great example of ahead-of-time genius, work that draws on elements of progressive rock, notably "Larks Tongues in Aspic"-era King Crimson for all its abrasive, warped rhythm, as well as Can, Neu!, and Faust's pioneering work -- though there is little else that comes close to the unique and distinctive avant rock sound, an entirely new take on the rock format. Their self-titled debut is a radical conglomeration of progressive rock, musique concrčte, free improvisation, and even -- in a bizarre distillation -- aspects of British folk can be heard in Charles Hayward's singing. There are very few records that can be considered truly important, landmark works of art that produce blueprints for an entire genre. In the case of this album, it's clear that this seminal work was integral in shaping the genres of post-punk, avant rock, and post-rock and like all great influential albums it seemed it had to wait two decades before its contents could truly be fathomed. In short, This Heat is essential.

Grand Funk Railroad - Grand Funk

    Genre: hard.rock, rock, 70s, progressive.rock

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=132917

Review - Grand Funk Railroad's 1970 somewhat eponymous album, their second for Capitol, is characteristic of the classic rock radio sound that would permeate the airwaves of the late 20th century. Grand Funk Railroad was a seminal force in giving the friendlier side of the heavy rock sound its charm and making it stick. Built on fuzzed-out blues riffs, simple lyrics, and at times seemingly unnecessary jamming, Grand Funk's songs are mild in nature. Far less extreme than Black Sabbath, but slightly toothier than Foghat or Bad Company, Grand Funk's major influence is from the loose, blues-based power trio formula of bands such as Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Grand Funk combines rawness with radio-friendly melodies and vocal harmonies that would become their trademark sound. Hordes of bands to come, from Foreigner to Bon Jovi, would emulate Grand Funk's sound and style, focusing on good-time rocking material while attempting a few token social commentary pieces. This is a good album as far as early hard rock goes, and as Grand Funk Railroad would move farther and farther away from the type of roughness and loose arrangements found here, it is well worth picking up as an example of one of their early efforts. This just might be the greatest poor man's Led Zeppelin album ever. Not to be confused with their later efforts of pop style radio smash hits, this early era of Grand Funk Railroad showcases a funky and raw talent that is often overlooked. Get ready to get yo' funk on.

Boulderdash - We never went to Koxut Island

    Genre: Leftfield, Ambient, Abstract, IDM

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=146474

Review - A few years ago I was having a discussion about music with my friend eigentensor, and he asked me if I happened to have a copy of this album. I had never heard of it, or seen it anywhere, but something told me that he was to be trusted. I ordered a copy of it used from somewhere for a couple bucks, and it was a great investment. This is exceptional IDM - glitchy, melodic, dark, fragile, noisy stuff. The track 'Headless In A Topless Bar' is simply fantastic.

    Jaames's Pick

Der Dritte Raum - Mental Modulator

    Genre: techno, trance, electronic, hard.trance

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=411452

    Discogs Review

Mental Modulator is the best release by Der Dritte Raum. All of the tracks are long, textured and extremely well thought out. Lyquit (DNA-Klone) I believe is D3R's best track to date and Tunnel takes the place of No.2. This is a must have for all who appreciate excellent electronic music.

    achifari's Pick

The Little Willies - The Little Willies (NEUTRAL LEECH)
    Genre: Jazz, Folk, Country
    Torrents: torrents.php?id=75055

Personal review: Whenever anyone makes a "its freeleech time, what should i listen to" thread or a "i'm bored with all my music, recommend some new stuff" thread, this is always my first suggestion. Norah Jones has a beautiful voice that is often under-appreciated because, for the most part, she sings slow songs that put people to sleep. But here she is upbeat and singing songs with her friends and obviously having a great time doing it.
