Account security - 30/04/15

Given recent events on other trackers about peer lists being stolen, we would like to once again remind you of the importance of account security! Please use a password that is both strong and unique to HDBits. Unfortunately, hijacked accounts are not a rare occurrence. Please also realise that any hijacked account can endanger all other accounts as well as this very site itself.

As stated in the rules, everything that happens to or with your account is your sole responsibility. Permabans are not outside the realm of possibilities. Especially if something bad happens, we will know no mercy.

However, this news post is not only meant to utter a warning and a threat, but also to let you know that we will be rewarding people who enable 2-step verification on HDBits! 2-step is a security mechanism that can protect against types of attacks that even the strongest passwords cannot.

In order to enable 2-step, go to your profile settings > Security and enable 2-step by scanning the QR-code (or manually entering the hex code) with an application like Google Authenticator or WinAuth. This app will now generate a new 6-digit code for HDBits every 30 seconds. All you need to do is enter a valid code once and 2-step will be activated. In the login screen, all you need to do is open the authenticator again and enter the 6-digit code again.

It may seem slightly confusing at first, but remember that on private PCs you can just use cookies to remain logged in. If you lose your phone you can always come to our support channel where we will manally verify your identity and disable 2-step. Alternatively, print a hardcopy of the QR-code, which you can just rescan after losing/resetting your phone.

The reward for having 2-step enabled is an additional 5 BP/hour, regardless of whether or not you're seeding something! After all, having this protection enabled will protect your account even when you're not active.
