FileList 12th Anniversary

Dear community,

We are entering the "holy week" and we would like to organize a few contests because we need your help. On 4th of September we celebrate our 12th anniversary, thus starting today up until September 7th global FreeLeech will be enabled. Besides that, every 24 hours you can claim your anniversary gift by clicking on the gift in the bottom left corner. Before revealing the contests that start today I would like to offer some context.

This is about our new website:





Roughly 2-3 years passed since we first started thinking of changing the source code that gives life to our website. Even though over the years we have optimized the existing code base hugely, we are convinced that we can do better. The code is old and any tracker that is based on old sources like TBDev is bound to have some issues at some point. We want to avoid this.

Obviously, our first thought was to migrate to Gazelle (for those that don't know, Gazelle is one of the best tracker sources out there) but the huge problem was we would still have to re-code a lot of it to make it fit our needs. Gazelle is mainly focused on music and us being a general tracker, it would require core changes. However, even if let's say we would make those changes, it still wouldn't really fit our needs. With that in mind, one and a half years ago we began coding everything from scratch. We have built it from ground up, inherently build it around our needs and wishes (the community needs and wishes, because yes, we do see every suggestion and request you make). To accomplish this we have used cutting edge technologies which allowed us to reach our goal: performance.

There's no point in chasing our tails, so here are some details of what we are doing: - for those with technical knowledge: OOP coding pattern, PHP 7.2+ native, PDO MySQL with prepared statements (better security), Memcached, javascript, Bootstrap 4 front-end framework. We are using state of the art security functions, AES-256 encryption and for hashes only SHA-256. Because everything is OOP it will be a lot easier to maintain and upgrade the code base in the future. - everything is built from scratch, we have copied nothing over from the old source. - we have improved the torrent structure, implemented new categories and options. The browse page will look different. - we are changing our search engine to something modern with realtime indexing capabilities (includes the new torrent filters). - native language system. The website will be 100% Romanian or 100% English, no mixing anymore. The only content that won't be translated is the user content (forum posts, torrent comments) but you are free to talk in English anywhere and if you need help with something our community will gladly help you and respond in English. We have a lot of Romanians and foreign users that know/speak English. - modern & responsive design. Users will be able to create themes and share them with the community. - two new user classes and some changes to privileges. - performance will be greatly enhanced, allowing us to implement pretty much anything the community will ask for.

There is much more to be said, but we really don't want to spoil all the surprise.

As a small comparison between our current source (and I repeat, it does work good) and the new one that we code: - on the old one, because of the way the old code is written, roughly 40-45 queries (per visit) to the database are required to display the main forum page; - on the new one we have cut that down immensely, 3 queries are required in case of a server restart, otherwise one query per visit is all we need. This brings a huge performance boost and it will allow us to enable things that are normal to have on a forum. Sure, we could have re-coded it on the current source, however the lowest we could bring the query count would still be too high.

The amount of work that we need to do is far from small. We are also upgrading the entire database (structure, tables, fields, data, etc.) and considering that we also have a personal life, family, job, etc. it takes much more time than we have wanted. I think that any technically skilled person that understand what we are doing knows that the amount of work that needs to be done is massive. At the end of the day FileList is just a hobby and there are moments when we didn't have time to work on this at all. Even so, we are 50% done.

And why would I tell you all of this? Well, first, we don't want you to think that we do not want to improve our lovely website. Second, we need a new logo and some new forum icons. There will be more contests and information to follow in the near future. The prizes are worth your while in my opinion and contests will stay open much longer than the anniversary ones.

Începem "săptămâna mare" și dorim să organizăm câteva concursuri pentru că avem nevoie și de ajutorul vostru. Pe 4 septembrie împlinim 12 ani așa că de azi și până pe 7 septembrie este FreeLeech global și este activ și cadoul aniversar (o dată la 24 de ore puteți da click pe cadoul de jos din stânga). Înainte să pun link către concursurile care încep de azi aș vrea să ofer puțin context.

Ne dorim de 2-3 ani să schimbăm codul sursă care dă viață site-ului nostru. Deși sursa noastră este optimizată destul de bine suntem convinși că se poate mult mai bine. Codul este deja vechi și orice tracker care are o astfel de sursă mai veche (TBDev, etc.) în final va avea probleme. Ne dorim să evităm asta din timp.

Evident că prima dată ne-am gândit să portăm totul pe Gazelle (pentru cei care nu stiu, este cea mai bună sursă pentru trackere) dar problema imensă era că trebuia să recodăm mult prea mult că să fie așa cum ne dorim noi. Gazelle este axată în principal pe muzică, noi suntem tracker general. Și chiar și pe Gazelle codul sursă nu era chiar ce ne doream.
Așă că de mai bine de un an și jumătate ne-am apucat să scriem o sursă de la zero special făcută pentru nevoile și dorințele noastre (ale comunității, și da, vă auzim de câte ori ne sugerați ceva). Folosim doar tehnologii de ultima oră și gândul cu care este scris totul se poate sublinia într-un singur cuvânt: performanță.

Nu vreau să o lungesc prea mult, că nu acum este momentul dar câteva detalii despre ce facem:
- pentru cei care au cunoștințe tehnice: stil OOP, PHP 7.2+ nativ, PDO MySQL cu prepared statements (securitate îmbunătățită), Memcached, javascript, Bootstrap 4 framework. Folosim ultimele funcții de securitate în domeniu, encriptare AES-256 și pentru hash-uri doar SHA-256. Ținând cont că totul este OOP, în viitor vom putea actualiza orice în domeniul securității (și nu numai) cu ușurință.
- nimic din sursa veche nu este luat, totul vine codat nou.
- structura torrentelor este regândită, categorii noi și opțiuni. Automat și pagina browse va arăta altfel.
- schimbăm tot motorul de căutare (include noile filtre de la torrente).
- sistem nativ de traducere a site-ului. Site-ul este 100% în Română sau 100% în Engleză, în funcție de ce alege utilizatorul.
- design modern și responsive. Utilizatorii vor putea să își creeze propriile teme și să le împartă cu comunitatea.
- două noi clase pentru utilizatori și diferite accese schimbate.
- performanța va fi mult, mult, îmbunătățită și o să putem astfel adăuga pe site aproape tot ce își doresc utilizatorii să fie.

Ar mai fi multe de spus dar o să mai descoperiți și singuri, nu vrem să vă stricăm toate surprizele.

Ca o mică comparație între sursa actuală (care repet, merge bine) și cea nouă la care lucrăm:
- pe sursa actuală, din cauza felului în care este codat totul, este nevoie de execuția a 40-45 de interogări la baza de date (pentru fiecare vizită) pentru a afișa prima pagină de pe forum.
- pe sursa nouă am redus drastic numărul de interogări, doar 3 sunt necesare în caz că se dă un restart la server. În rest este nevoie doar de o singură interogare pentru fiecare vizită. Diferența este uriașă și ne va permite să activăm lucruri care sunt normal să fie active pentru toată lumea pe un forum.
Sigur, puteam îmbunătăți asta și pe sursa actuală, dar numărul minim de interogări era tot mult prea mare.

Este foarte mult de lucru, facem upgrade inclusiv la baza de date (structură, tabele, câmpuri, date, etc.) și ținând cont că avem și viața reală, familie, serviciu etc. durează mult mai mult decât ne așteptam. Cred că orice persoană mai tehnică care înțelege ce facem știe că volumul de muncă este imens. La urma urmei FileList este doar un hobby și pentru noi și uneori sunt perioade de timp în care nu am avut timp să lucrăm nimic. Chiar și așa, este gata în proporție de 50%.

Și de ce am povestit toate aceste lucruri? În primul rând ca să nu credeți că nu ne dorim îmbunătățiri și pierdem vremea și în al doilea rând pentru că avem nevoie de un logo nou și de iconițe noi la forum. Vor mai urma oricum și alte concursuri în viitor. Premiile sunt pe măsură cred eu și concursurile rămân deschise pentru mai mult timp decât cele care sunt de ziua FileList.

A mai trecut un an. Am făcut 12 ani. Suntem de 12 ani împreună pe FileList și suntem încântați că această comunitate înflorește de la an la an și asta datorită vouă! Voi, userii, sunteți cei care dau valoare și fac acest tracker să funcționeze. Vă mulțumim că sunteți alături de noi la bine și la rău.

We have been together on FileList for 12 years and we are delighted that this community is flourishing from year to year and all of this because of you! You, the users, are the ones that give this community value and we thank you for being with us for better or worse.
