The What.CD Fifth Birthday Celebration: Day One

On October 23rd, 2007, Oink's Pink Palace - described by its users as "one of the world's largest and most meticulously maintained online music repositories" - had its doors closed. In that moment, one of OiNK's users set himself to the task of fixing the problem. Alone at his laptop, the man we'd come to know as WhatMan began work on moo.cd. Stock TBSource, purple categories, competing projects, humble beginnings. A series of fortunate events and a very short period of time later, WhatMan, nando and The N Man - shortly to be joined by A9 - began work on What.CD. On October 27th, 2007, this site was officially born.

Since its start as a reaction to what the online music world lost, What.CD has become a juggernaut within the torrenting community. We house over 1,475,000 torrents representing over 640,000 releases by over 517,000 artists. Weekly, our staff team puts in hundreds of hours of dedicated work for no reason greater than their love for this project. Our teams support the staff in countless ways both large and small, sharing the burden by developing new features, improving our forums, and more. Our community - second to none - has grown healthily from its small beginnings, and the tireless efforts of thousands of contributors ensure that this growth will remain unchecked. Our innovative interview system has remained open since its inception, founded on the belief that merit and knowledge are the best routes to participation. We are not just the world's largest private BitTorrent tracker. We're also the best.

We intend to celebrate the enormous achievement that is our fifth birthday. Over the next few days, we have a number of surprises in store for our community, so be sure to tune in regularly. As staff members, we view ourselves as servants to the project itself, and we know that your uploads, your creativity, and your participation make What.CD what it is. We'd like to offer a thank you to the users who have populated our halls with what is increasingly becoming the world's most perfect collection of music, and to the staffers and team members both present and past who have shouldered the responsibility necessary for keeping What.CD alive.

Today's offerings include a variety of new features developed by both the Developers and Build Team, our latest installment in the annual tradition of staff interviews, the first day of irredentia's ever-popular statistics feature, a special present for everyone, and a celebratory round of staff picks.

Our developers and the Build Team have been working for months to create new features and make changes to the site in anticipation of our fifth birthday. The following list represents the features we're launching today, and we hope you're as thrilled about them as we are. For more detailed documentation of the new features, visit the wiki article or click through into this update's discussion thread to share your thoughts.

In 2009, we began a tradition of conducting staff interviews on our birthday. It's 2012, and the tradition continues! For our fourth round of interviews, we decided to change things up. Below, you'll find interviews conducted by users and moderators alike. In order to take a gander at the master list of interviews conducted over the years, please check out the wiki article. This year's interviews are listed below.

For a long time running, irredentia has been our resident guru for all things related to site statistics and their visual realization in the form of mind-blowing graphics. Now that he's a moderator, the statistical engine has been thrown into overdrive. Over the next few days, you can expect a litany of charts, graphs and figures visualizing snapshots of our statistical reality five years in. To begin, we bring you the What.CD Collage Stats 2102: Pie Fantasy Edition. Enjoy your birthday pie, boys and girls.

Freeleech tokens are designed to let you grab the music you're desperate to hear, but can't afford to snatch. We were going to buy you some presents this year, but then we figured that you're grown up enough to pick up a few gifts for yourself. These are on us. Every user has been awarded Five (5) Freeleech Tokens which can be used to pick albums you'd like to download for free. Please read the token wiki for more details, and enjoy your shiny new present.

It just wouldn't be a birthday celebration without a lineup of staff picks for your enjoyment! Today's musical selection quite the diverse offering. Please note that these staff picks are a mixed bag of Freeleech and Neutral Leech. If you're curious, remember to look at the label beside the torrent you're downloading in order to determine its current state. Enjoy the picks, and remember to discuss your favorites in the thread!

    Review:
Very few albums make you feel like you have just been transported to a forested realm of faeries, nymphs, elves, and other woodland creatures of lore. This is one of those albums, with a soothing effect on the mind that can only be gleaned when listening to the melodic sounds of harps and flutes contained within this album. Whether you are reading a high fantasy epic or taking a stroll through the flora of a park, this album is perfect for setting the right tranquil ethereal atmosphere to escape the bustle of modern-day life.

Clinical Trials - In the Wake of the Digital Afterlife

    Genre: Rock, Grunge

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=72178014

    Review:
Clinical Trials is the electro-grunge offspring of Somer Bingham, a self-produced musician whose sun-drenched childhood in boring but beautiful Florida did nothing to quell her inner angst. She migrated north to seek bleaker pastures, finding trouble in the big city before eventually settling in Brooklyn, NY.

Music came after severe heartbreak left her bitter, without purpose, and in search of the most extravagant and difficult means of making her ex jealous, i.e. by becoming a rock star.

The sound of Clinical Trials is influenced by Nirvana, Patti Smith, PJ Harvey, Ladytron, Sonic Youth, Depeche Mode, Ayn Rand, long walks on an imaginary beach, and Russian literature. Bingham's sonic goal is to meld her unhealthy Kurt Cobain obsession with dirty synthesizers and distorted beats - and she finds success on the debut EP "In the Wake of the Digital Afterlife," which was digitally released on January 1, 2010.

Bingham is now joined by Cici Harrison on the drums, forming an all-female grungy live show that proves why duos are just so hot right now.

    Matmos - The Civil War

    Genre: Electronic, Avant Garde, Experimental

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=100846

    Review:
Matmos are frequently known as much for their collaborations and musical process as their own music. The Civil War as an album holds together whether you're familiar with the group or how they make their music. As a concept album, it imagines a world where the Civil War of the England and the Civil War of the United States are a single conflict in a single era. This is established by unusual period instrumentation and songwriting. For most of the album, electronic instrumentation is used in a way that mimics other instruments, and the album is full of the sound of hurdy gurdys, recorders, pipes and simulated rackets. The more period-inspired songs come off as marching songs or the sort of music a group of weary musicians might be playing in the small hours in the safety of camp. The album rushes into contemporary glitch-inspired electronic music about half of the time, such as in the beginning of "Reconstruction" , "Ytte", "Pelt And Holler" and the artful cover of "The Stars and Stripes Forever", re-imagined as a toystore jugband nightmare. The end result is a sound with one foot rooted in history, and the other in today.

    Review from Ananke:
This is my favorite album ever! In fact, my three favorite songs of all time are "All that she wants," "Waiting for Magic," and "The Sign." I really cannot tell you how much I love "The Sign" [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]! It is definitely the best song ever! I play it in the car every morning, and I listen to it before I go to sleep. My goal in life is to meet Ace of Base and get them to sign my CD! If you love it too, send me a PM!

When I bought this CD 16 years ago, it was solely because of the album name. Today, Antichrist Superstar remains as one of my all time favorite albums. There are so many tracks that I love in that album, but I would recommend you start with Antichrist Superstar and The Reflecting God.

El Ten Eleven - El Ten Eleven

    Genre: Post-Rock, Ambient, Electronic

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=7381

    Review:
El Ten Eleven is a Los Angeles-based instrumental indie rock duo consisting of Kristian Dunn and Tim Fogarty. What separates El Ten Eleven from their musical peers is that they are only two musicians on stage creating pounding landscapes of sound with no laptops or sequencers. Dunn switches off (sometimes mid-song) between a double-neck bass/guitar and a fretless bass, while his feet dance on an extensive floorboard of looping devices and effects pedals. He plays everything live, loops himself and juggles all the layers of tracks on top of each other. Fogarty switches between traditional acoustic drums, roto toms and electronic drum pads, usually within each song. To add to the insanity, Fogarty will occasionally loop himself as well.

This is his first book.

James Zabiela - Renaissance: The Masters Series 15 - Life

    Genre: Electronic

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=724031

    Review:
Almost 5 years ago now I made a friend through teh interwebs that I have never met in person. We've had extensive conversations about music, life, love, goals, and everything in between. He gave me advice during some of my darkest hours, and I in turn did my best to be there as a friend whenever I had the opportunity. This individual provided me countless musical recommendations, significantly broadening the scope of music that I enjoy, and again, I tried to do the same in return. I consider him a closer friend than many of the people that I know in real life.
As I write this, it's been about a week since his name went dark on Pidgin. I had known this day was coming for quite a while, yet my own life had thrown me extra loops in the days leading up to it, so I was unable to say anything to him prior to his vanishing. He was leaving the country; he had spent the last two months learning the new language and was following his dream, to enter a culture that he felt he was more spiritually close to than the one into which he had been born. I wish him the best of luck, and I'm sure that he will find what he's searching for.
I have been a fan of the Renaissance series of DJ mixes for some time, but when this particular mix by James Zabiela came out, my friend told me in no uncertain terms that this was one of the best mixes he'd ever heard. In fact, he told me at the time that he hadn't listened to the second disc at all - there was no need, the first disc was so perfect that he didn't want to take the chance that the second disc might take away some of the magic. The first disc truly is an amazing experience, and it reflects many of the lessons that I have learned from my friend over the years. I dedicate this pick to him, as thanks for the friendship that we've had and hopefully will have in the future. Tracks 4-5-6 on Disc 1 are epic.

    John Talabot - ƒIN

    Genre: electronic, house , nu.disco

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=72128958

    Review:
Barcelona house producer John Talabot has a knack for capturing the very specific kind of bliss associated with dancing on Mediterranean beaches at the height of summer. A penchant for rising chords means that all his melodies make you feel like raising your arms and face to the sun. Talabot also has arguably the greatest sense of build-and-release in dance music since prime Booka Shade: ƒin is full of incredible tension-releasing moments, from the extended break in Destiny to the entrance of Missing You's bouncing bass. The generosity of Talabot's sound can also be ascribed to the amount of disparate ingredients he puts to use in service of his aesthetic – particularly the variety of human voices on display. There are wordless chants and bright, optimistic pop hooks; an echoing scream is plucked from a horror film and deposited in the middle of a carnival on Oro y Sangre, while on So Will Be Now, cut-up vocals coalesce gradually and gorgeously into recognisable language. All of humanity seems to be here – and it's busy celebrating being alive.

    Albert Ayler - Spiritual Unity

    Genre: Free Jazz

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=108654

    Review:
Free jazz is a touchy subject, but at its best it lives up to the ideal of freedom its name implies. Simply put, Spiritual Unity just is free jazz's best. It is a no holds barred assault on a single, fairly simple, quite catchy theme, taking it apart with relentless determination, and finally putting it back together, the same as it was, but also radically reconceived.

Consider the Source - Are You Watching Closely?

    Genre: progressive.rock, ethno.fuson

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=499540

    Review:
From the first time I saw them in a grungy-ass bar in New York, I knew that Consider the Source was something special. With their insane stage presence, even more insane technicality, and the mastery with which they play their instruments, I'm shocked they don't have a wider following in the progressive rock scene.

A blend of Middle-Eastern inspired riffs with some hard rock and a healthy dose of Mahavishnu tossed in, Consider the Source makes for one hell of a rocking band.

    Yppah - Eighty One

    Genre: electronic, downtempo, trip.hop

    Torrents: torrents.php?id=72140173

    Review:
Landscape and memory have always played a central part in the music of Joe Corrales Jr. aka Yppah (pronounced “yippah”). It’s what gives his tunes both their sense of place, their physicality, and their ethereal - almost nostalgic - sweetness. His third album for Ninja Tune reflects a change in the landscape around him. Midway through the process of recording the demos for what became Eighty One, Corrales started making regular trips to Galveston, on the Texas Gulf coast, to surf. So energised was he by his experiences, he left his home in Texas and moved to Long Beach, California. Unsurprisingly then, he says that the images he had in his head as he made his new music were of the sea and the beach. “I wanted a lot of the songs to feel like a warm wash,” he explains.

On tracks like “Blue Schwinn” you can feel the pull and push of the ocean, the sun refracting through water. Corales bifurcated belief in the power of both hip hop and My Bloody Valentine is still evident, but this is the warmest, most uplifting music he has made. This is reinforced by Corrales’ other source of inspiration. The record takes its title from the year Corrales was born and, perhaps the very act of moving away from childhood locales stirred up “memories from random times in my life. Like I was trying to recreate certain feelings I had at different points in my life with melodies, if that makes any sense.” And he goes on to ask, “You know how when you’re a child you feel your life has a certain melodic theme that you can’t really put your finger on and you can almost hear it, but its not anything you’ve ever heard before?” Eighty One is his attempt to capture those melodies.

The last piece in this act of reinvention is the presence on four tracks of Anomie Belle, a singer, producer and classically trained violinist based in Seattle. The pair met when Yppah was touring with Bonobo in 2010. The pair hit it off and Corrales contributed a remix to Belle’s album, “The Crush.” In return, she offered to listen through to demos of Eighty One

to see if she could find a track which she could add something to. In the words of Yppah, “it was such a natural fit she ended up doing four!”

Beautiful, uplifting and imbued with a natural, unaffected warmth that cuts through the most biting cold, Eighty One is Yppah’s most satisfying work yet.
